Making Memorial Plans
Having just returned from a golf-free week at the in-laws, which was preceded by a golf-free week of piled-up work, I am very ready to get back to the great green game. And, wonderfully, the joyous week that is the Memorial Tournament lies ahead. I am lucky enough to live within walking distance of Jack's great Muirfield Village course, and I am also lucky enough to be able to take time to attend the tournament at least a few days. And this coming week I have the added excitement of my dad joining me for the event. I am already getting excited as I think through my plans for attending next week.
Interestingly, over the years I have found that, when attending a tourney in person, I enjoy rounds 1 and 2 more than the weekend rounds. But I still have not yet decided if I enjoy sitting at one hole to watch many groups go through, or watching a few choice players make their way around the track. I tend to do a little of both. And readers out there have in-person tourney watching advice?

I was at the Tour Championship at East Lake GC in Atlanta in 2001 (I think it was '01). Anyway, Here are the best tips/tidbits I can offer.
I had the week long pass. I had WAY more fun watching certain players at the practice round and Member/Pro rounds. Ernie Els was laughing and joking with the crowd. Davis Love was pretty nice, Tiger was very serious, and Justin Leonard looked like he had a stick up his ass the whole week. Never saw a smile ever.
I'd avoid Tiger during the rounds as much as possible. Seemingly 90% of the people are following him, and he has the rudest fans. He brings a lot of people to the game, but unfortunately, they don't have many manners. I don't mind if kids want to stand in front of me to get a good view, but when grown men are pushing and shoving me (and I'm a big guy) to get a better view, I draw the line.
I also caddied at that course, so I chose to watch a few key holes which I was interested to see how the pro's handled them. Then after about 4 or 5 groups, then I'd pick up and follow whoever was around. I had a great time doing that.
Wish I could go. Have a great time!
I've attended the NEC Invitational/NEC World Series of Golf since I was 8. We would always go and sit on a hole on Sunday, usually #2 or #3 and watch the leaders go through. Then we'd race home and watch the tournament at home from the comfort of our house. I also have done the practice rounds and I caddied in the Sr. PGA at Firestone. I love spending time on the range and watching them practice, you'll learn a lot and get some good idea on what it actually takes to be on tour.
I've always walked -- or in following Tiger, walked fast. It's more tiring, but you do get to see more of the course. But, if there is a signature hole like 17th at Sawgrass, it would be fun camping out and seeing the train wrecks waiting to happen.
