A different putting contest

I understand the complaint -- and basically agree -- that the U.S. Open set up turned last week's major into a glorified putting contest. But is this week's PGA event, the Booz Allen Classic, where you basically had to shoot two rounds in the 60s to make the cut, really any better? Since you have to go so low, you cannot afford to two putt much if you want to to keep up with the leaders. Though it is nice to see pros make some birdies, it's a bit crazy when shooting two rounds in the 60s still means a morning tee time on Saturday.

I thought about this as I played this weekend. If the USGA and PGA Tour really want to negate the effect of 300+ yard drives, all they need to do is mow the fairways a little longer and keep them soft. No more drives that roll 75 yards. Then, let the shotmakers do their thing in attacking greens--what they do better than anyone else.

Herron shot four rounds in the 60s and never really was in contention. Several individuals flirted with shooting 59. Thus, the characteristic of the mini-PGA Tour...which includes the old B.C. Open, the Lumber tourney, and the Booz Allen, where the big names don't play, and the unheard of get their first win (not that Scott is unheard of at 23 years old with 3 PGA Tour wins, and 4 European wins).
As for making a course difficult, rather than sticking the pin 16 inches from the fringe, make the rough tough, and penalizing. On most weeks, the bombers can hit it long, and the course is in such good shape that the ball will hit the rough and still go another 40 yards. As for making the fairway soft, that will penalize the short guys more than the long guys, because they are the ones most likely to hit the fairway. The Fred Funks will get taken out of contention on the long courses.
If someone can bomb it and keep it in the fairway, they deserve the advantage. If someone bombs it and hits 50% of the fairways, they don't deserve to be in contention. Sure the players will moan, but the ball doesn't need to be scaled back, just make the hazards what they are...hazards, and you'll see players more leary of just gripping and ripping it on a regular weekly basis.
