news flash: duval to play U.S. Open
At long last, David Duval is coming out of a self-imposed golf hibernation. David's game slipped considerably in the past 2 years and got to the point where he couldn't hit his driver anywhere close to the fairway. Part of it was injuries, but eventually it became to be a complete loss of confidence. Meanwhile, his personal life had a couple ups and downs. He broke off his engagement to his long-time girlfriend, but then eventually found a new love and married her.
Well, now, it appears David has been doing more than making cameos at Tiger Woods's house for a Nike commercial for the new Ignite driver. (Funny commercial, though. Frank, Tiger's headcover, quips after Duval breaks Tiger's car window on a practice swing: "That's the best swing you've made all year, Duval.")
David now says, "I'm ready to go play." Welcome back, David.

At last indeed. The game is poorer without him.
Talk about a fall from grace. I was never a fan of Duval's, but I respected his game and the competitive drive he had behind him.
The previous poster was right, the game just isn't complete without him in the field. I hope he gets himself back on track!
Regarding David, he was out in Arizona about a month ago. His game is still pretty shaky, don't expect much this week...but it is good to see him at least attempt to play competitively.
Regarding the open layout, the course is going to be open for low scores if the wind is nonexistant, but if the wind kicks up...whew...it could be brutal. For those of you don't like links style layouts where hitting the fairway, does not ensure you will stay in the fairway, this is not your year. 3 out of 4 majors will be on links-style layout (even if they don't fully live up to the definition, the style of play to succeed on these courses will be similar). I think this is great. The trend in American layouts with target golf as a common characteristic, has made the necessity for 7,500 yard courses. Rather than listen to Jack and make the golf ball fly shorter, keep the fairways as they are, but make the rough a "hazard." For today's pros, sand traps are no longer hazards, but as in most Opens, you will see the rough in the Open as a true hazard...not just grass 2 inches longer than fairway grass, perfectly manicured, and not a deterrant from firing away at a tucked flag. I love this characteristic of European courses, which is why you hear little complaining on that side of the pond regarding the distance a ball flies, and why their courses have stood the test of time for centuries.
I don't mind a regular season tournament being won by a score of 20 under, but make the rough more difficult on a regular basis. The long guys can hit a two iron on a 450 yard par 4, and they can still go at the green with a mid-iron...why make the rough easy so they bomb their drivers without any worry?
