phil's equipment changes
Does it make sense for Phil to switch his driver and golf ball right before the Ryder Cup? A number of viewers of the Golf Channel have questioned Phil's timing of his equipment change. I wonder how long he's been practicing with the Callaway driver. Of the American Ryder cuppers in the Canadian Open, Phil finished last.

That's a great point. It doesn't make sense at all does it? Surely the logical thing to do would be to wait til the season's over and then switch in the winter so you're comfortable with the new gear come the new season. Still, Phil would potentially lose out on a big load of dollars by doing that I'm guessing? With Phil Mickelson being arguably the US's best player at the moment this could well tip the sacales in the European's favour. It's going to be such a close run competition, a loose drive from Phil could in theory decide the fate of the Ryder Cup. All because he couldn't wait til the end of the season to sign an equipment contract? Tut Tut....
Miles hit the nail on the head. Phil's marketability is at an all-time high, and his contract was expiring, and the Callaway offer was ripe for the picking. Was Phil sure he would win majors in the future? Probably not. So why not go for your retirement money while the iron's hot rather than worry about the piddley money made in tournaments (compared to endorsement money), and get the new contract set now rather than for a significantly lower number in the future. And had he gotten hurt before then, he flushed a whole lot of money down the drain. Golf is a business, and I think by taking the deal now was a good business move for Phil.
