herman mitchell

Long-time caddy for Lee Trevino, Herman Mitchell passed away yesterday. The most enduring memory I had of Herman was, appropriately enough, in the Skins Game a while back. Lee Trevino hit a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, and afterwards he got the biggest bear hug from Herman. Herman, you will be missed.

I regretfully learned of Herman Mitchell's passing today June 3, 2005. I am fortunate enough to be able to say that I knew this man personally. Herman was very intelligent and extremely funny.

There will never be a greater bond, or love, for a professionnal golfer to his caddy, than that between Lee Trevino and Herman Mitchell. Herman's shoes were never replaced with Lee. No other caddie came close to filling them.

God bless you Herman,

My family owned the little motel where Herman would stay during the old Energizer Senior Tour Championship (at the Dunes Club) in Myrtle Beach. I was only in second grade at the time, but got to meet many special caddies who stayed with us year after year. Herman was one special man that I will never forget. He only stayed one year with us but he was so fun, gave me bear hugs, and when I followed Lee around the course Herman point at me and Lee would smile during times at the driving range, Herman let me come behind the ropes and see things first hand. Although I was only 7, I still remember Hermans big smile and what a good and giving spirit he gave to all.
