goosen: "probably not right" to give women exemptions

Retief Goosen has entered the fray about Michelle Wie's sponsor exemption at the John Deere. Retief suggested that it's "probably not the right thing" to give women sponsor's exemptions to play on the men's tour. Let the women qualify, says Retief.

Who has Retief been hanging around with? Vijay?

I think he's right. If she qualifies, it's another story.

Did 15-year old Tiger Woods "qualify" for the Nissan Open? No.

to repeat:

the "taking food out of the mouths of the working pro" argument doesn't hold any water. having wie there will increase the take at the gate, increase the advertising revenue, and bring more interest to the sport. in the long run this leads to higher purses and more dough for "the working pro". they should thank her for playing. let's compare year over year ratings for the John Deere Snoozer when it's over.

the second argument is weak too. wie has proven that she can hold her own and not embarrass herself playing with the boys.

I agree with Retief. I firmly believe exemptions should be earned...she's got talent but she's won nothing of merit yet.

This was brought up on the 19th hole on the Golf Channel Monday, and the Big Break chubby had these intelligent arguments as to why she should not get an exemption:
1) She has never won an amateur tournament (wrong).
2) It is not a big deal for her to miss the cut at the Sony by one stroke because it was her home course (are you kidding me?).
3) If she did make the cut, then he would change his mind (if she is not given an exemption, how does a high school kid have the time and money to go through the ex3emption process and invalidate your point?)
This guy gets paid to show his lack of golf knowledge.
Golf Channel: go the route of the Bast Damn Sports Show (i.e. Tom Arnold now making limited appearances), and make your show an intelligent discussion.

Give her all the exemptions she wants. She will never make the cut at any PGA Tour event.
