nike: No. 1 irons at Masters?

Well, you're not going to believe this. USA Today reports that Nike irons were the the No. 1 used irons at the Masters -- apparently by paying some of the "older" players $20,000 to use the Nike irons.

Here's the scoop: "How it was won, though, has competitors accusing Nike of guerrilla marketing for paying several past Masters champions $20,000 each to play its irons. Charles Coody, Tommy Aaron, Sandy Lyle, Ray Floyd and Billy Casper — who shot 106 — all played under the swoosh at Augusta National. Those aging stars were enough for Nike to edge TaylorMade 17-15."

This happens all the time. When I played College Golf, there were a few tournaments where club distributors gave away free clubs in order to say that they had the #1 club at XYZ tournament.

Kind of fishy, but this is what it takes to be the best!!

Want to know how to stop this kind of thing? Taylor Made needs to take out a full page ad in every golf mag and a banner ad on every golf website saying, "while we respect the elders of our game, and agree that they have the right to be paid for their services as professional golfers, it is both deceptive and dishonest to pay past champions to play equipment in order to make claims about that equipment's usage at the Masters.

Tell me, would those past Masters champions have played Nike's equipment had they not paid them?"

Or, maybe more simply...

"Maybe the reason that Billy Casper shot 106 at the Masters had nothing to do with his age..."

But they would never do it. Too much respect for Casper.

A few years ago, I caddied in the Sr. PGA Championship at Firestone CC. My pro was constantly stalked by the Taylor Made rep to get him to play the new driver they were promoting. Same thing, he was given the clubs and literally was custom fit every practice round until he had a club that he would play.

By the time he had a driver that he had liked, he hadn't hit his driver that he brought to the tournament, and was thus "stuck" playing his Taylor Made.

So it goes both ways... Also, I knew back in the day that Cleveland Golf used to pay players $4,000 to play their irons.

My point is that the golf companies consider it advertising expenses and as long as people believe that the "pros" are playing it, they will continue to do it!

I can't imagine the tears from presumably, Taylor Made, about how Nike got to be the #1 club at Augusta. So what?

Taylor Made has found a way to put their drivers in almost every Tour Players hands...and not for cheap. They do the same thing. Does Taylor Made go out and say, "Gee, we are the number one driver on the Tour this week. However, the majority of players using a Taylor Made product either failed to make the cut or finished somewhere down at the bottom of the barrel. But hey, we are still #1".

When Adams "Tight Lies" fairway woods made it's splash, it did so with a lot of endorsement money going out of their offices and into the pockets of Tour Pros. At the same time, I was playing with what I feel was/still is a superior club made by Tour Edge, a local Chicago based company who just recently is getting main stream attention as a innovative club manufacturer. Tour Edge could have gone the route a few years ago of paying some well known stars to play their clubs. They didn't. They have built their business steadily over the past 20 years or so. They would have been a household name if a Nick Faldo or Nick Price played their clubs. It isn't always about quality. It seems to be all in the name.

I really can't see a problem with it? It's been going on for years. All the top players play clubs that they are being paid to play.

All Taylor Made need to do is pay $25,000 next time instead. At the end of the day, it's coming out of the amatuer golfers pocket, cos the companies concerned will hike the price of clubs up, to pay for the endorsemants and advertisements. Like a big wheel going round.

I'd assume that Taylor Made is just angry that they did not think of it first.
We'll see in future tournaments what happens.
Nike will probably counter by saying that they were just supporting the great players that the game was built on.
Advertising...a world of smoke and mirrors.

It's just like making the claim, "The No. 1 blog for all things golf."

It's just marketing.

Taylormade has nothing to complain about as they continously pay players to put drivers in play on every tour. Their commercials tout themselves as the "number 1 driver in golf" They were caught paying for Thursday only play when the Darrell Survey is counted on bags of players. Players take the money and run. All the big companies do it. Taylormade is the worlds worst at whoring their equipment to get artificial numbers on the Darrell Survey. The best equipment being made is not even in the top big 6 equipment makers. They use crappy shafts in their production stuff. Pay attention to what the players are playing that the players are not getting money to play. That is the cream of the crop in equipment. Giving out free equipment does not make you the best, just the sluttiest. I have been out there on tour and know all the tricks the big boys use to make claims and the American media play along with it. Nike doesn't even design their own stuff. American golf companies are just a bunch of marketing knuckleheads that disrespect the buying public because the buying public has been sooooooooo gullible for the past 20 years. Nuff said.

How does a company like Sonartec get to be the number three fairway wood and the #1 hybrid in PGA Tour events when they do not pay anyone to play?
