tiger's major thrillers

Tiger has prevailed in several close major thrillers -- which was the best?:

1. defeating Sergio Garcia by 1-stroke at the '99 PGA Championship.

2. defeating Bob May in a 3-hole playoff at the '00 PGA Championship.

3. defeating David Duval by 2 strokes at the '01 Masters.

4. defeating Chris DiMarco in a playoff at the '05 Masters.

I tried to think of the times Tiger has lost in close thrillers, but could only come with one (so cheated by adding the TPC to the mix):

1. Rich Beem over Tiger by 1-stroke at the '02 PGA Championship.

2. Hall Sutton over Tiger at the '00 TPC.

3. can anyone else stare him down, mano a mano?

Gotta be either the matchup between DiMarco or May. Tiger's amazing shot on 16 on Sunday probably makes it the more thrilling victory, even though he bogeyed the next two holes.

Tiger was also in contention down the stretch during the 1999 US Open at Pinehurst, when Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson had their duel, and he also had a putt on the 18th to tie at the 1998 Open at Birkdale won by Mark O'Meara.

I feel for DiMarco. He outplayed Tiger and the rest of the field for the entire tourney besides 9 holes early on sunday morning. If he had shot anything under 40 that morning, he blows away the field and wins his first major. Even heads up with Tiger, he crushed him. Everyone seems to forget that.

His win against DiMarco probably doesn't rank among any top win in the his or anyone's history. It was a Major victory so that makes it a good one, but that's the only reason.

IMO Tiger vs May still ranks #1, if memory serves they both shot final round 65s. Tiger won that on pure guts and competitive instinct, he was a little flat on Sunday but May woke him up and Tiger answered the bell big-time, the shotmaking from both was insane, never seen anything like that duel, maybe never will...

DiMarco? Great final round but it was close only because Tiger faltered. In the end DiMarco played 18 twice in a row and both times couldn't hit the green with a mid-iron in his hands -- which, if you think about it, is actually damn close to a choke.

Tiger Vrs May gets my vote. It was tight and tough from start to finish.

There was no goofing around like that "Palmer-esque" little move he made on the back nine at Augusta...he keeps grandstanding like that and his 9 for 9 record at Majors will falter. That said, I think he'll win at least one more "Big M" before the year is out.

Definitely Bob May.

Hey Bob May, done anything since then?

Gotta be either the Bob May PGA or the DiMarco Masters. The other two ('99 PGA and '01 Masters) aren't even close. I'm a big fan of the '01 Masters, but even I have to say that the duel with DiMarco blows it away.

I believe Bob May's performance for an unknown golfer against the world No.1 going for 3 majors in a row was out of this world. i get goose bumps just thinking about it. Where is Bob May now??

THE GHOST OF GOLFING PAST

A haunting question still remains
About Tiger in the Woods
I wonder why no one complains
Hearing obvious falsehoods

The PGA Championship
Nearly seven years ago
Fell prey to more than gamesmanship
As a full review might show

Golf commentators soon clammed up
Though some scenes had raised a brow
May would have won that treasured cup
His performance was a wow

That playoff was a stunning one
As they battled head to head
Till Tiger’s driving came undone
Though he may have been mislead

He clearly had some outside aid
From two fans who chased his ball
That lie could never have been played
From that bush as I recall

One kept onlookers far away
Whilst the other went inside
And threw the ball back into play
With no penalty applied

For seconds it was out of sight
Ere like magic it appeared
The record should be set aright
Even though no name be smeared

Results may never be reversed
But the glory should be shared
Bob May in my mind did come first
Simple truth must be declared
