Major Monday
The Golf Blog had an editorial meeting of sorts at the Memorial yesterday. We're all excited about the next two weeks. This week the women will have their 2nd major of the year, the McDonald's LPGA Championship. Annika has won back-to-back and goes for a 3-peat this year, fresh off a victory last week (see yesterday's post). Then next week, the men go to Pinehurst for the U.S. Open, where Retief Goosen gets a chance to defend.
To get you geared up, The Golf Blog will be running an exclusive interview with Natalie Gulbis this week. Next week, one of our writers will be at Pinehurst to give a report. And, looking ahead, we also hope to get out to St. Andrews for the British. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. Check back this week when we get the reality from Natalie. Enjoy.

Jimenez shot a 62 yesterday to win his 13th European Tour event. I didn't watch any of the coverage, but the thing that stood out was that he shot a 62. Has there ever been a tournament on the PGA Tour where the course was a par 69? Perhaps this is another sign that the old courses in Europe are the hardest hit by the length the players are hitting the ball.
Not really because the Welsh Open was played on the Roman Road course at Celtic Manor http://www.celtic-manor.com/golf/courses.html. This course was opened in 1995 with a par 70 (reduced to 69 for the 2006 Wales Open), ideal for all the guests at this 5 star resort. If they want a sterner test they can play on the par 72 Wentwood Hills opened in May 1999. This course following alterations is in construction - but will be the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. It has in the past hosted the Wales Open but due to the changes couldn't this year. Their offical website quotes: "Holes 5-12 remain, 7 new holes are being built and holes 3 & 13 are being modified. A new clubhouse will also be developed. The new holes will possibly be completed by Spring 2006."
Thus at this moment in time it is unknown whether the Roman Road course will host another Wales Open. It was a good test of golf, and the pros only had 2 par fives to claw shots back at. Infact the third at 586 yards averaged 5.02 for the week so that just left the 16th for low hanging fruit.
