UPDATE: Tiger/Daly no match for Phil/Retief
The Battle of the Bridges is back tonight, with Tiger and John Daly teaming up against Phil and Retief. Apparently, it's the last of these kind of prime-time events because Tiger's just tired of them (who could blame him?). The coverage starts on ESPN2 at 7pm, and then ABC at 8pm. Hopefully, it will be good.
UPDATE: Retief Goosen got hot on the back 9 and birdied 5 of 7 holes. Goose and Phil closed out the match on the 15th, 5-3, after both Tiger and John Daly hit poor drives. ESPN's coverage here. Just like the Skins Game, this Battle of the Bridges is in desperate need of some rest and then major revamping. What about Tiger-Sean O-Hair v. Annika-Michelle Wie in some format? Or maybe it's better to let sleeping dogs lie?

I watched the match tonight even though the standard of play was not what we are used to. The course was set up to show us some spectacular shots, but they didn't come off for the players.
I think Goosen's play against Tiger might give him some confidence though...
It was only a 3 year deal to begin with, $1 mil per for 3... so the Bridges could sell real estate & memberships...
I don't think ABC was that thrilled either, ratings were low last year and I doubt they were much better this year... the overnights will tell.
I would like to see something like that, too. Isn't the whole idea behind these for them to be crowd pleasers? I'd love to see a battle of the sexes.
Rough timing for the event, as well. Daly (great finish this past weekend!) and Goosen just finished their rounds in Europe. Same with Phil if he hadn't missed the cut.
Tiger still trying to re-energize from the British, and has the Buick this week.
I don't think any of the players were really too fired up to play strong...it wasn't like any of them had anything to gain...other than a little cash.
It is an interesting format, but it would be interesting if you had the players each put up money of their own (say $100,000-$200,000), and battle it out for the win (maybe individual match play?). Then have large bonus prizes throughout the match provided by the sponsors (long drive, closest to the pin (par 3s and par 5s in two), driving a par 4, etc.)
