Wie's great drama and a big (super big?) story
As this article highlights, Michelle Wie's impressive 70 in the first round of the John Deere Classic puts her right around the cut line and sets up great drama for Friday afternoon. And we can watch all the action:
Wie will be golfing in the final threesome of the day, starting on the 10th tee at 1:48 p.m. It will play to the USA Network's coverage window of 3 to 5 p.m., but national television won't leave us hanging. CNBC will follow Wie from 5 p.m. until she finishes her round.
Unless Wie blows up on the front nine (or shoots 30), it seems pretty likely that her final nine holes should be great drama as she flirts with the cut line. Of course, adding to the drama is how huge a story it would be for Wie to make the cut. Even putting aside her gender, Wie's tender age would make her second youngest person ever to make a PGA cut! (Bob Panasik made the cut at the 1957 Canadian Open at 15 years, 8 months, 20 days; Wie is just days older since her birthday is October 11, 1989.)
I have been trying to gauge just how big a story it would be for Wie to make the cut. I'm inclined to say it would be the biggest story not only in golf, but perhaps in all of sports, this year, and arguably among the biggest stories in women's sports in decades. And, if Wie could manage a Top 10 finish....

Not that I think it will happen because I don't know what the criteria is, but what if Michelle Wie managed to finish high enough to qualify for the British Open? Wouldn't that be something?
2 birds in her first 3 holes! I'm giddy.
I heard that she could finish as low as 16th and still get into the open. I dunno if that'll be possible now, but with the way she's playing ANYTHING is possible.
I think once she makes the cut, she's gonna gun for the lead, because she's not really seeming daunted out there at all.
And there is no way she melts down here like she did at the US Open.
When do we think she'll go pro?
I mean, she has to consider it after this summer. I keep hearing she'll go pro at 16.
If Morgan Pressel gets an exemption that she's asking for to get into the LPGA early, surely Michelle shouldn't have a problem getting on either.
Michelle's been better.
bummer.
