Getting into a major mood with some predictions

In this comment, Power Fade rightly notes that some of the golf bloggers have let themselves get distracted when we should be gearing up for the season's last major. Fortunately, Power Fade gets the PGA talk going with an interesting prediction of Stephen Ames to take home the hardware. Interesting choice, but I am not convinced.

Of course, Tiger is an easy pick. But, interestingly, the folks at SI's Golf Plus picked Retief Goosen (though this was before his surely tiring victory at the International). There are great major story lines around both Tiger and Goosen, and I do expect them to both be playing in the late afternoon on the weekend.

Notably, Tim McDonald at TravelGolf.com is here predicting who won't win the PGA: "Any European." Though Tim has history on his side, again I am not convinced because my pick is:

Sergio Garcia.

We hope readers might use the comments to make their own predictions, perhaps aided by this official site of the PGA Championship. You can further scout by checking on the pairings for the opening rounds at this link, where I was intrigued to see the groupings of (1) Sergio with Mickelson and Adam Scott, (2) Tiger with Michael Campbell and Greg Norman, (3) Vijay with John Daly and David Love, and (4) poor Mike Weir with David Duval and Ben Curtis.

After this week, I have 7 months till I hear the sweet melodies of Augusta coming out of my TV. So here I go:
Garcia or Ames? Bet on Garcia to win, you get 22 to 1 odds on your money. Bet on Ames, get 150 to 1 odds on your money. Why would I pick Ames?
Sand saves and putting. Garcia may be a longer driver, and neither are that accurate off the tee (who is?), but Garcia makes less than half of his attempts to save par out of the sand (remember Jobe?) He also ranks 200th in putting...averaging more than 30 putts a round. Putting alone, he'll have to make up 6 strokes over four rounds to Ames...on average.
Garcia has been #1 in putting in two tournaments, and finished 1st (Booz Allen) and 2nd (Wachovia). In the Players Championship and Open Championship, he shot his worst round on Sunday due to what? Putting.
I'll take the odds on a big return on my money, and take Ames...hope he makes me proud.
