How Big Can Wie Be??

Here is an interesting Forbes.com article about the endorsement deals that Wie is supposed to be signing when she turns pro. The article also compares her package of endorsements to those of Tiger and Annika.

I find it interesting and funny that in the same article it is reported that Annika makes 5 million a year off-course, while Wie is likely to make up to 10 million. Then the writer makes the point that Annika will only earn a fraction of Wie's earnings off-course. Granted, 50% is a fraction, but is that really a worthwhile statement? Five years from now, if Wie continues to spend a good chunk of her time in men's events missing cuts and women's events in the top ten (but not winning), will the endorsement contracts still be there. I think the fact of the matter is Nike is willing to take a chance throwing money Wie's way in the hope that she might become the phenomenon that Tiger is, boosting Nike as a golf company.

I think the writer was saying Annika's earning of 5 million will be only a fraction of what Michelle may be making in a few year.

5 years from now Wie will be 20, about to turn 21. She might be a full time college student, but that remains to be seen. She certainly will not be using her father as her caddy. Even if her game does not improve, a better caddy should be able to boost her performance, and not much is needed to make her an LPGA winner and/or a PGA cut maker. Top 10? She made top 3 in the majority of her events this past year.

Michelle Wie will be worth plenty in Asia--and frankly, if Michelle Wie does turn out to be bigger than Tiger, Nike doesn't want her to be with someone else.
