Question: Whose name will be tarnished the most from Wie DQ?

We've been receiving a lot of venomous comments directed at some of the participants in the whole Michelle Wie disqualification. So we thought we'd try to get a better sense of a comparison among the whole lot. Answer this question: whose name will be tarnished the most from the Wie disqualification?

A. Michelle Wie

B. Her caddy Greg Johnson (picture here)

C. SI Reporter Michael Bamberger (if you see the video of drop, guy in pink shirt)

D. LPGA Rules Official Robert O. Smith (picture here)

It may not be fair, but that Bamberger guy is already being vilified, even by some members of the press.

Don't you think Wie is actually coming out ahead? Think of all this publicity for the low low price of $50k. I think this is just going to raise awareness for her and for golf. A little intrigue never hurt anything. I think Bamberger is going to lose the most from it.

The point is is that Michael Bamberger wasn't doing his job. He actually violated the very first rule of his profession (or one of the first): Don't become part of the story.

I think he should be fired.

In today's society no one wants to take responsibility for their own mistakes. Wie made the drop, she is not mature enough to be on tour. I am so tired of the media hype around her.

I don't like Michelle Wie either, but I think it's just flat wrong to say she wasn't "mature" during the entire fiasco. Did you even watch her press conference? She handled herself better in answering questions than the LPGA official Robert O. Smith.

I'd say Robert O. Smith. Bamberger looks like a villain, but Smith and the LPGA should've known better than to DQ Michelle with the flimsy evidence they had.

At the risk of seeming overly negative, I think the real loser is the LPGA and golf in general. Some may object to all the over-the-top Michelle Wie hype, but the fact of the matter is that this is the best thing that has happened to women's golf in a long time. Look at the fabulous effect that Tiger has had on the popularity of men's golf! All those people who tuned in to their first women's golf match to see Michelle and ended up seeing Annika's stunning play, Paula and Natalie in their fetching pink outfits :-), etc. are potential fans for life.

I doubt that the best thing for the sport is to have the player who generated all this excitement in the first place disqualified on a bizarre technicality a day and a half after the fact. This makes golf look old-fashioned and hide-bound, which is exactly the reputation that it should be trying to shake.

I'm going with the conspiricy theory: Bamberger told LPGA officials about it, but in an effort for the LPGA to get TV revenue, they did not approach her until after the round ended Sunday. This gave fans what they wanted and probably boosted viewership.
Just kidding.
The people at fault are the rules officials. Here's a question: Reggie Bush pushed Matt Leinart in to the end zone to win against Notre Dame. It was shown on instant replays, yet USC still got the win. Michelle Wie, her caddy and even Grace Park accepted her drop. If they DQ Wie, they should DQ Park also.

Definitely the LPGA, Bamberger second, and golf in general, for having rules no one understands.

I watch a lot of golf and I've been watching more LPGA events than PGA because the men are BORING!

But since this stupid ruling, I've lost all respect for the LPGA, even though the PGA is like watching serve and volley tennis. More courses should be set up like US Open. I don't want to watch a player shoot a 62

Michael Bamberger -

I love it.. Just doing my job.."Hey, I can't stop to save that drowning puppy, I'm a reporter, I am just doing my job"

My educated guess:
1. Michelle Wie benefits the most -- tons of PR, even if negative, she has, what, 3o+ years of her career ahead of her. As long as Michelle doesn't fire her caddy (no sign), then her caddy is safe, too.

2. LPGA Official Robert O. Smith can hide behind the scenes at LPGA. The guy is old and did act like Al Haig when Reagan got shot, but he probably avoids most of the flak.

3. Poor Bamberger. Maybe that's what you get for wearing a pink shirt on TV. He's the one who will forever be looked at differently by the fans, the press, and the players. I don't know if this is all justified, but, hey, you live by the sword...

Good to see that one of Bamberger's colleagues and friends (Boston Globe golf reporter) stepped up and got it right:

Bamberger is going to lose the most from it.

He waited on purose to force a DQ instead a two-stroke penalty.

He's more coniving and unethical then he is imcompetant

Hey, Michael - - -
You were NOT just doing your job. You are a complete ASS and I hope you get fired and SI goes bankrupt! But, you are not the only jackass here. The LPGA showed it is a second-class organization by accepting your comment in the first place and disqualifying Michell. You CANNOT prove that the drop was wrong! How many times did you pace it off before you came up with your conclusion? The most obvious thing is the absolute envy of the LPGA players. Not one stood up for her but plenty of the PGA players did. The LPGA does not have the right to capitalize on Michelle's popularity if they can't even support her against a pervert like you. And, speaking about how precious the RULES are, their stupidity and greed surpasses their envy by now "bending the rules" to allow her to play the NABISCO. That's total hypocricy!
There is a very small window of opportunity for the LPGA to reverse Michelle's DQ and give her her due with the most humble apology - - - it they can't do that, to Hell with them all!
