I'll say it first: Wie's a choker
Though perhaps not as terrible a label as "cheater," the label "choker" is one that every athlete surely hopes to avoid. But, after her bogey, bogey finish to miss the cut in Japan (and a number of other late round melt-downs in big spots), I am ready to hang the choker label on Michelle Wie.
Of course, it is terrible to put this caustic label on a 16-year-old developing golfer. But when you now earn a million dollars just for showing up, you have to start dealing with adult criticisms.

I would say when you enter an open event, state that your goal is to win the event, take a million dollar appearance fee and then do not even make the cut, then you need to be able to deal with the criticism. I am guessing the tourney would like to chat about a 50% refund.
I did not want to use the word "choke" in my previous post which is why I used phrases like: "a habit of folding when the pressure is on", "its how she is not doing it", "so far she has not shown she can close the deal", " when she does not perform". Choke seemed just a bit harsh.
But is choke those most appropriate phrase? You decided:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke
Choke in sports is failure on the part of an individual athlete, or an athletic team, to win a championship, especially either when favoured to do so, or after squandering a large lead late in a season or tournament.
While the choke label is premature...it does make one wonder if the flaw in Wie's development (winning something)may inhibit her progress.
Like him or not, Tiger's Dad masterfully developed AND nurtured a prodigy.
Papa Wie appears to be more cash (less championship)focused.
Choke is definitely the most appropriate word. This isn't the first time shes 'choked' nor will it be the last.
She'll never amount to anything near what Tiger has accomplished. As noted earlier, Tiger loves the game and wants to win. Wie may love the game too, but she is just a little more interested in the money at this point in time.
It's great this site has so many experts on choking.
You folks need to step back and think about what you are saying. If any other woman on the planet, or any other 16 year old male or female, just missed the cut by a single stroke at this event, it would be hailed as an incredible accomplishment. If Wie misses by a stroke, you think of it as an embarasing defeat, worthy of ridicule. I wish I could "choke" like Wie!
This goes to the last comment. I agree if some kid did that we would reconize it as being a good player. SHE NOT ANY KID and thats her fault for putting her self out there for the "Choke" comments. She is not a Choke. She is still to young to even know what Choking is. BUT, please ask her to stay in Womens tounries until she proves herself. I know she will be a Great player some day and wish her all the luck with tring to beat Annika.
Until Wie is a full-time golfer, it is totally premature to label her a "choker."
She simply has not yet developed her putting technique. That's it, plain and simple.
Judge her after she has played a couple of years full-time on the LPGA.
big $$$ demands big results
no matter how old you are
If you gave her the money, then maybe you can have those lofty expectations. Otherwise, it's just envy and jealousy.
"Choke" isn't an "adult criticism," it's an egotistical judgement. She's 16, for Pete's sake. Anyone remember Woods playing with pros when he was 16? He didn't do so good. If tournaments want to pay someone to play in their tournament, that's their risk. If the Sony people thought handing Wie a million bucks would assure her a win, they're not very wise investors. The critics on this page who are so ready to pounce on her when she doesn't meet their expectations should really wonder why they are so ready to damn a 16 year old golfer (who could, not coincidentally, easily kick their asses up and down any course in the world.)
WIE SHOULD SHUT HER MOUTH. ANNIKA PLAYED ON THE MEN'S TOUR TO JUST SEE HOW SHE WOULD DO - NOTHING MORE
WIE, ON THE OTHERHAND, IS TALKING ABOUT PLAYING ON THE MEN'S TOUR. PERHAPS SHE SHOULD WIN ON THE LPGA FIRST. SHE'S A GOOD GOLFER AND A PRETTY KID, BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT TOO BRIGHT IF SHE CAN'T FIGURE OUT THAT THE MEDIA JUST WANTS TO EXPLOIT HER. ALSO, SHE MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND SEE HOW THIS LOOKS AND HOW IF MAKES THE LADIES' TOUR LOOK
