Bigger Story?? Wie misses cut or Duval makes cut??
Even though Mulligan has been spending a decent amount of time talking about Michelle Wie, I'd like to turn people's attention to the fact that David Duval is 1 for 1 on making cuts this year. So I have to ask, which is a bigger story, Michelle's poor play or Duval's making the cut?

I think the story for the year is the fact that Duval shot the lowest round of the field on Sunday outside of Roaring Rory's 62.
Or the fact that we finally have a new class of Nationwide Tour grads that look poised to knock the big boys around a little.
Duval makes the cut is a bigger story (and I agree that the round he had on Sunday is just as big of a story). Wie is a phenomenal talent but she needs to prove herself on the LPGA Tour first, and then compete with the PGA Tour after that. Duval is a former #1 golfer on the PGA Tour, and it will be great to watch his year and to see if can obtain his exemption for future years. We have created a website specifically for that - www.duval2006.com - thanks in advance for visting the site.
Feedback is welcome, and we are looking forward to a great year.
Unfortunately, I don't think either story merits much attention. So Michelle Wie shot a 68 on Friday? Big deal. I agree that she's got tremendous talent and that the sky could be the limit for her, but she's never going to be a factor on the PGA Tour. The sooner that she accepts that fact, the better for her. She needs to start learning how to WIN on the LPGA Tour. Until she does that, she runs the risk of becoming a major bust, especially compared to her more accomplished peers Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.
As for Duval, I think it's fantastic that his game is showing some signs of life, but I don't think he will ever get back to where he was. I think that unfortunately his career is destined to be considered a disappointment. He won a British Open and had a great stretch in the late 90s and early 00s, but his desire to compete just isn't there. That's his choice, if he would rather spend time with family and do other things than golf, no one can criticize that. he's earned the right to do whatever he wants. But I see him being very similar to Ian Baker-Finch. Both guys won Opens and were on top of their games when they fell off the plateau and never got their games back.
Since I did not expect either to make the cut, the original Double D making it and then going really, really low on Sunday should have been the bigger story. What we all need to remember is that unless you finish first or do something really amazing, finishing T-31 is not going to get Joe Average weekend sports viewers attention. Outside of those of us who post to golf blogs and newsgroups, most probably did not know Duval played, if they even know who he is.
I should also add that taking M.W.s total for the two rounds, I would not have said she played poorly. I predicted on a golf newsgroup that she would miss the cut by 4 so her result was what I expected. Not making the cut but also not DFL.
...waiting for the Duval 59 and another sweet fist pump. until then...ill take Duval's low round.
