The Daly report

It was a tough day for John Daly off the course, after his wife headed to prison for a 5-month sentence for participating in an illegal drug ring and a gambling conspiracy offense. On the course, JD shot a 69, which was amazing given the circumstances.

Also big news: JD is officially playing TaylorMade's R7 driver and sporting a TaylorMade hat (see here from Golfweek). TaylorMade must have paid JD extra, because I can't remember the last time I saw him wearing a cap.

Bummer. Seriously my (like your) first impression was to laugh, but JD has a place in my heart. His attitude towards living life, while using every stimulant and beverage known to man, is very graviational. Everybody wants a piece. Its a big bummer to see that hit at a time where his stock in the golf community was rebounding.

JD's new show is classic. I enjoyed the laid back style of the show. I think it will be a classic. He is not afraid to look into the past, be different, and play the GAME.

During the last show at the Open, he was talking and getting ripped by VJSingh for his poor attitude towards the game and lack of competitive spirit. Well he played deep into Sunday's groupings. I respect that.

If VJ would enter the National Spelling Bee, he would attempt to memorize the entire dictionary, where as JD would crack open a Miller Lite and figure out all of the secrets. I respect both methods, but it was great to see them collide in a conversation. Very cool.

Study the game, but dont lose sight of the game. Hearing JD's respect for Augusta and St. Andrews, and disrespect for practice rounds really showed me that he is a special person, because he plays the game for the core tradition, and nothing else. On the course he wants to be amongst the tradtion he so respects. Off the course he would rather be home and be a fan of football, drink beer, and eat pizza. I respect that balance.

Beyond the fact it is easy to laugh or look at him as a circus clown, remember the fact that he dug deep at St. Andrews to beat Rocca. That will be a moment that I will never forget. 2 Majors more than Sergio. Serious.

Have a nice weekend.

With a haircut like Daly's, he should wear a hat more often.
