The hullabaloo over Bubba
As I chronicled here, ferocious swinging Bubba Watson was the third biggest story of last week, next to David Toms's impressive victory and The Golf Channel's coup in securing exclusive cable rights to PGA play in 2007. Besides being mentioned by The Golf Blog, how do you know you've generated some buzz in the golf world? Well, you get a whole article devoted to you by Golf World's Tim Rosaforte, who was awarded The Best Golf Beat writer by TGB for 2006 (see here).
As usual, Rosaforte's article's great (see here). Here's a flavor:
"At the Sony, four of his drives in the final round traveled over 360 yards. At the 12th, he was two yards shy of breaking the 400-yard barrier. The scary thing: He only missed three fairways in the final round, shot 65 and finished fourth.
"Watson is more than a circus act experiencing his 15 minutes. He is the reason why Tiger Woods went to graphite and why Mickelson was experimenting with a 47-inch shaft this off-season. Watson is the future. He is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds of elasticity, and he didn't appear the least bit nervous on the weekend, finishing with an eagle on Sunday for a check of $244,800 that represented job security."

I'm surprised you mentioned the Golf World article without mention of the Golf Magazine article on Bubba Watson before the season even began. Senior Writer Cameron Morfitt told the story of Watson through college and his home town, and thought that he might be a break-out player on tour based on his driving length on the Nationwide Tour.
He's 6'3", his wife is 6'4" (ex-WNBA), and here is a quote (Boo Weekley went to the same college):
“He’s got the perfect attitude for the Tour," Weekley says. "He doesn't care what anybody says or thinks. "To be fair, Watson has to direct more than his share of traffic since he often hits his drives into those fans, who have no idea where to stand since they don't know what he'll do next. Will he pitch out? (Not likely.) Will he aim through the hula-hoopsized gap in the trees toward the green? (More likely.) Bubba has become such a deft escape artist that the player he resembles most is not Daly, but Phil Mickelson. Also like Mickelson, he's learned to cut down on risk.
"What's so amazing about Bubba is that as far as he hits it, he was one of our tour's most consistent players," Nationwide pro Olsen says. Indeed, without a single victory, the Bagdad, Fla., bomber slowly moved up the Nationwide money list from 63rd in 2003 to 37th in '04 to 21st last year, earning his call-up to the PGA Tour. Some pundits think he'll do even better in the Show, where big, broad-shouldered courses cater to home-run hitters.
In re to Bubba Watson:
-I guess Bubba Dickerson and Tom Watson got married a couple of weeks ago. I did not know that. Wonder what state they got married?
-Respect for "Big" Bubba Dickerson. Sick Am career. He knew everything about shrimp.
-By the way, could Tiger Woods get in trouble if he jumped over the ropes to make sure that his wife was not being hounded by a houligan? Would Timmy Finchem stipulate a fine?
-I am Tiger Woods.
-Where is Aaron "Badds" Baddeley? Probably quit golf to play Ultimate.
Thoughts for the day.
It is amusing to me to see all the attention Bubba (watson) is getting, as I played high school golf with him. It is also strange to me that no one has mentioned the fact that Bubba played high school golf with Boo Weekley (not the same college as mentioned previously) AND Heath Slocum. Kinda wierd to have 3 PGA players from the same little po-dunk town.
Bubba Watson, Camilo Villegas, and all the big strong athletes that have taken up the game of golf are the future...Tiger Woods was the start of this movement, and courses were lengthened to take the advantage away from the guys who can smack the ball a mile, but in the next few years those guys are going to be the majority and not the minority and we are going to see a big change in the game....and frankly I think it is great...I love Power Golf ....
