Plight of PGA: ABC walks out on golf

A sign of the times: the network lost a lot of money on golf in the past 5 years. First casualty: ABC, which is leaving golf in 2007. More from USA Today here: "the networks have said they were losing money on golf, and Finchem brought a revamped schedule to the negotiations this year. Starting in 2007, the tour will feature the FedEx Cup, a points race that culminates with three blockbuster tournaments, ending with the Tour Championship."

I watch professional golf on TV every week THURS-SUN (I watch at night and skip the commercials, thanks DVR). What's wrong with the televised coverage is the announcers. THEY SUCK! They always crack dorky jokes, and the tips are a joke. I blame the producers for the commentators being boring and not appealing to the core golf demographic which is the weekend warrior. We don't care about televised tips, that's what the Golf Channel is for. You don't see freethrow tips in Basketball, or "How to throw a perfect spiral" in Football. I WANT PURE GOLF!

No wonder ABC backed out, look who they have, Azinger, Faldo, no one wants to hear from dudes who SHOULD BE PLAYING NOT COMMENTATING! Faldo, who I respect, has the most annoying stupid comments and jokes. Get back on the course Nick.

Oh yeah, the best announcer is Feherty. He's a freakin' riot! I don't know why he's not a stand up comedian.

I also watch golf on a regular basis and I for one enjoy hearing from Azinger and Faldo. The fact that they both have been at the top of the game, or close to it, for me is a big deal. They give us an insiders perspective on what it's like to be out there and what's going on in the players head.

As for there humor, I think you just have to "get it". They both make me laugh out loud on a regular basis.

If we are going to get rid a a commentator, my vote would be for Mark Rolfing. He is completly wortless in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the comment about announcer sucking, and also the fact the tips are useless to the majority of the viewing public. Nick and Azinger need to stick to commentating what's going on and not what they feel should go on (they dominated in a different era). Peter Costas, Gary McCord, and actually the entire announcing staff CBS sucks. Just describe what's happening and let the public make up their own mind about what needs to happen.

They need to take note from Roger Maltby who exemplifies a player who is just relaying what's going on.

I think ABC wants to pick up LPGA when it's getting hotter.

We watch golf regularly and love it dearly, but listening to Gary McCord turns my stomach. We hit the mute button. His ramblings are ridiculous and no one cares. Can't someone advise him to speak only when spoken to and then to state only what is happening --not ramble on.
