the return of cobra?

Back in the day, Tiger Woods used to play a Cobra driver while an amateur. And so did Greg Norman when he was the World No. 1 (see here). Hale Irwin also used Cobra clubs for some time on the Senior tour. But then, the popularity of Cobra seemed to wane.

This weekend, things may have changed. JB Holmes won the FBR Open using Cobra woods and sporting a Cobra cap. And the young gun Camilo Villegas, who tied for 2nd, also was sporting a Cobra cap. That's really gotta help Cobra drivers when you have two young guns who look of average size, but who can bomb it off the tee.

I had a Cobra driver for a short while (everyone buys me golf certificates for X-mas/birthdays because they can't think of anything else). One thing distinctive of a Cobra is the fact that it sounds like a college baseball game when you tee off.
(Ping!!!)
Never could get used to the sound when the ball came off the driver, but everyone on the course could hear where you were.
After trying a few drivers in the last two years on a regular basis, it seems that all the major companies have reached the same technological plateau. Really, the look and sound of the driver is what I go for...unless I want to splurge for the weighting screws, but that is what lead tape is for.
Yes, in testing, one driver may go 5 yards further under similar conditions, but I really haven't found a large difference over the long haul.

Holmes uses the 454 Comp driver from Cobra, it doesnt have that really loud Clink at impact. I recently switched from the Cobra SZ 440 to the 454 and it is much longer. I have played Cobra drivers for the last couple of years and have often wondered whey they dont have much traction on the pro tour. Maybe these young guns will bring attention to a great product.

On an unrelated note, Luke Donald shot a 62 at Spyglass this morning...tying Phil's record from last year...a score most players said last year was the best round of the year.
Unfortunately, I'm sitting at Pebble today. Unfortunately...Ha.

I used to play the 440 SZ, but now I have Cobra's newest driver, the F/Speed. I like the loud noise off the face. It's more of a warning signal to the group in front of me. Watch out! Ball coming straight down the fairway!
