The Tiger report: 60 Minutes interview

If you missed it on Sunday, the transcript is here. Yahoo has the video clips from the interview here.

Asked why a golf swing is so difficult when Tiger makes it look so easy, he replied, "So many moving parts. Your whole body's moving, and this ball is not moving. It's standing still, laughing at you."

After watching this interview, it makes me like Tiger even more. His attitude, while some people might not like it, is refreshing simply because while to some he sounds cocky...he can back up everything he says..that is not cocky that is simply confidence, and to succeed you have to have a bit of an ego and confidence. The guy is just amazing, I am not sure if it was in this program, but my cousin is a golf pro here in TN and I was talking to him about Tiger, and he told me of an interview he had seen with some of the other PGA pros and when asked in an informal poll who the most under-rated player is on Tour they said Tiger....they said that we have not even come close to seeing all the shots and ability he has, that he pulls stuff off when playing with these guys in rounds out of tourneys that would make peoples heads spin....

Tiger is the Man and I don't begrudge him anything...he deserves the attention, the money, he works for it, the market allows it, and so I say good for him and I look forward to watching him for a long long time....

I've always thought that if you consider how Tiger's on top of the golf world and that he deservedly has a big ego...he's really a pretty good guy given all of that. Most people would not handle it as well as he does. If I could play like him I'd probably be the biggest jerk you've ever seen!

I use to work for an NFL team for most of the 90s and know others who were involved with NBA and MLB and for the most part, a big percentage of big time athletes are total a-holes behind closed doors and when the camera is off. There is a lot of really, really bad things they do that never get outside the locker room. I think part of the reason is because being that good requires a belief in yourself / confidence / ego that over time makes you think you are better than the rest of society. Throw on top of that the way the public falls all over themselves at the mere sight of one of these people and its almost hard to blame them for thinking the rules do not always apply to them.

Now I have no idea if Tiger is the greatest guy ever or if he is a complete jerk to the help. I have just never heard one way or the other. I have heard from a number of people associated with pro golf that Sorenstam is as nice a person as you will ever meet and that is a big reason why I am a big fan of hers. Now because of what I have seen, I really, really respect those who have made it to the top of their profession in the public spotlight who truely are nice people because they are the exception, not the rule.
