Phil = or < Tiger?
OK, there's been much banter on the sports shows today about how Phil Mickelson is playing as the best player today, even better than Tiger, at least for the moment. But I don't think anyone is really suggesting that Phil is better than Tiger Woods, all round.
The real question, I think, is whether Mickelson has proven himself to be a worthy adversary or rival to Tiger -- the adversary we've all been waiting for. Is Mickelson better than Retief, Vijay, and Ernie, in terms of competing with Tiger? I think he clearly is, but what do others thinks?
Next question: why is Tiger's collar so messed up?

RIGHT NOW it has to be Phil, he won the Masters this weekend, the Bell South by 13 the week before, and also the Players last year. We will see if he can keep it up and play well at Winged Foot.
In no way am I suggesting that Phil is the superior to Tiger overall, but Phil is on fire right now and clearly on top of his game.
Let’s compare their records…Since the 2004 Masters (which Mickelson won)…Tiger comes out on top on all the stats (except he has won one major less, and has one fewer top 10s in the major)…

His victories have come at the ’04 WGC Matchplay, ’04 Dunlop Phoenix (Jpn), ’05 Buick, ’05 Doral, ’05 Masters, ’05 British Open, ’05 WGC NEC, ’05 WGC AmEx ’05 Dunlop Phoenix (Jpn), ’06 Buick, ’06 Dubai Classic (Euro) and the ’06 Doral.

One point in common: both had a lousy Ryder Cup in Detroit.
Phil is in a zone. Tiger used to be in that same zone. It's a question of who want's it more.
That reminds me -- why on earth was Tiger wearing pink? Is that his red shirt from '97 that faded in the wash?
Is Phil a worthy adversary for Tiger? Yes. Is Phil better than Tiger? Never. Golfers can't be valued based on their performances over a period of a few weeks or even a few years. In the long haul, Tiger dominates Phil, and everyone else for that matter.

I don't know if Winged Foot plays into Phillips game. You have to remember that Augusta was designed by a guy who wanted to make RIGHT HANDED golfers look silly. Bobby J would have never imagined some southpaw walking up 18 with 3 in the bag. Augusta is set up to punish everyone but the lefthanders. In the last 6 years the winner of the Masters has been left-handed or Tiger, and as they stretch it out I feel it gets even more difficult for the right-hander. I don't think this is last Green Jacket Phillip will have in his Closet.
As for Winged Foot; your guess is as good as mine but I'm sure the boys over at the USOpen will over water the rough for a month, dry out the greens till they are rock hard, and narrow the fairways till they are UNfairways. With that it becomes a crap shoot. Sure you could be playing great Golf but one chip on the wrong side of a hole and you might be 145 yards back in the UNfairway.
What's more interesting to me than Who's favored. Is IF Phillip wins! we will have to start the discussion for the next month about IF Phillip wins the OTHER OPEN Do we call it the Tiger-Phillip-Slam? Do we call it the Phillip-Tiger-Slam? Do we break down and just call it a Grand-Slam? How about a Baby-Grand-Slam?
As for who is in the ZONE. I think most people would agree Tiger is not in any kind of Zone right now. He can talk a good game with the Golf Channel flunky as he walks off of 18 but lets face it, He's not as Long as he once was compared to everyone else. He does not Putt well. And he is not attacking the pins anymore with out a care in the world. The Tiger I know would have crushed one as hard as he could only to have three guys move a bolder so he could bank it off a score board under a tree over a creek and putt out a 35 foot bender for eagle. I did not see that Tiger this weekend.
Phillip is HOT right now. And with his short game he could easily keep it going but lets see what he does at Winged foot before we crown him King!
On a side note if my Skycaddie gives me a .000001% better chance of meeting Natalie Gulbis it's well worth the money.
The supreme irony is the more majors Phil wins, the better Tiger gets. By this I mean that as things stand, if Tiger ever reaches Jack's major total, the big knock on Tiger will be that he never went head to head with the "great" players that Jack did, ie Trevino, Palmer, Player and Watson. Therefore, the "greater" Phil, Ernie and Vijay make themselves, the more they enhance Tiger's legacy.
At least Phil will have one consolation - a big blown up photo framed in his study of Tiger putting that green jacket on him. How sweet was that for the Philster? Played like a real man Sunday. Deserves some kudos from me, one of his detractors.

I don't think it's even fair to say that maybe, suddenly, out of nowhere, mickelson is a better golfer. Tiger woods has for ten years been better than phil mickelson. Phil mickelson has attempted to catch tiger, and has been successful one time this year, no his 13 shot win over nobodies last week was not a win over tiger. Tiger woods is younger, stronger, and will do whatever it takes to be the best. Phil wont even run 50 feet to attempt to lose weight, which who knows, may help him play better. Tiger is going to stomp phil into the ground at the us open, like he did to everyone in 2000. Tiger has 15 more years in him, watch
i agree with joey. keep in mind that tiger's dad is dying. don't you think MAYBE he was a bit distracted this week? phil should enjoy his day in the sun while it lasts, because it won't be long.
