Phil wins second major in a row ... is he now the favorite at the US Open?
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson reversed roles in today's final round at the Masters. Tiger kept hitting great approach shots to give himself chances to put pressure on the leaders, but he missed every big putt. Meanwhile, Phil made all the key shots and putts; without making any big mistakes, Phil had a surprisingly easy back nine to get his second green jacket.
So, now that Phil has two straight victories in the majors (and more over the last two years than Tiger), does Phil become the early favorite for the US Open? Is it time to start talking slam?

this guy is pretty much Satan as far as I'm concerned. nobody ever talks about the rumors the players talk about on TV---phil's gambling, his infidelity, his rumored bastard child---that's why he's the most hated player on Tour.
I don't know what others think, but there was no drama on Sunday -- unless you count Rocco Mediate splashing two balls into the water on the par-3 12th hole.
Today, it was all Phil. Playing in the final pairing with good buddy Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson methodically dissected Augusta, shooting a 3-under 69, to finish 7-under for the tourney. Lefty had no bogeys until the last hole, after he was, by then, already up by 3 strokes and had basically won the tourney.
Phil Mickelson has a chance to equal the "Tiger Slam" if he wins the next 2 majors. What would we call it -- the "Mickelson Slam"?
CBS' coverage was pretty annoying today. Tiger fell a couple strokes back and they stopped showing him---while he was in the process of making three birds in a row to get right back into contention. then nothing on Rocco after his disaster. the coverage is so lame....this, like the NCAA basketball tournament, should be taken from CBS and given to ESPN or someone who will do it right.
by the way, what deal did phil make with the devil for Fred Couples to miss all those putts? that killed me....
you want to put this blog on the map? then take off the gloves with mickelson. it's widely known on Tour (johnny miller told me this directly) that phil has lost a fortune gambling---at least $10 million. why does everybody kill Daly with this kind of stuff but let phil off the hook? it's ludicrous. why do you think he switched to Callaway right before the Ryder Cup? So Phil played a solid round of golf to win a major. Personally, I tune in to watch these guys hit golf shots, not to see whether they gamble or cheat on their wives or how much they care about their families. If what you say about Phil is true (and I have no reason to believe any of it is true), it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that this guy has won 3 majors in the span of 2 years. Beyond that, I don't care.
it is certainly relevant to talk about what phil is doing in his personal life because he's profiting so much from his image. he puts himself out there. let's start with the gambling, which I don't even think is all that big of a deal normally. Everybody knows these guys like to gamble. But Phil losing all that dough forced him into an equipment change right before the ryder cup, which was very selfish and showed a total disregard for his teammates. that's why GQ ranked him in the top 10 most hated athletes and why he is loathed on tour. but fans still love him, only because fans don't know what a fake he is.
If ANYBODY else had done something like this, the press would have killed them. As it was, everybody pointed out how strange the change was but didn't go beyond that because there is some 'code of silence' when it comes to phil. mostly it's that they don't want to be the one who brings bad news about phil and sees everyone blame the messenger---much like you all are doing.
Maybe all that stuff is true about Phil, who knows? Daly gets the attention because he tends to have the cops show up at his house or hotel room which provides the firm evidence that gets into the papers. Everything DMCs mentioning is rumor and as such will not likely wind up being publicized directly in the press. Those rumors may be true, but until it's in the public record or people talk directly to the press it won't be anything other than unsubstantiated information.
10 million in gambling debts...a while ago one of the golf magazines ran a story on who makes how much money each year. Tiger came in at over 80 mil, and Phil was above thirty if I'm remembering correctly. Phil makes a beefy amount of cash every year so I'd be surprised if he couldn't pay a debt, even a 10 million dollar one.
Regarding the equipment change, Phil's always been one of those players who changes equipment frequently. He's a little like Couples in that way, just give them a cavity backed club they like the look of and they're in business once they get it fit and customized the way they want.
As for the cheating on the wife...Phil just doesn't look that horny to me!

The equipment change seems to have worked for Phil. If Tiger or any other pro decided that they needed to change, the Ryder Cup would not have stopped them. If Phil had some debts paid off, good on him. If he has made mistakes in his life, that would make him human. If his golf game is any measure, it doesn't appear his conscience is bothering him.

everyone on this site has way too much time on their hands. This is the kind of stuff you hear as you walk past the secretaries in the lunch room the day after the final episode of the bachelor. who cares about their personal lives? they certainly don't give a crap about yours. This is a shining example of what's wrong with sports fans.
Unlike most golfers, the contrived atmosphere and phony-baloney traditions of the Masters tournament make me puke. Yes they've held a fun tournament there for many years and Bobby Jones was a founder, but this isn't the Sistine Chapel, it's a golf tournament run by a bunch of boring old elitists who have convinced themselves they are the true keepers of the game. As far as I'm concerned, the people with old golf shoes and their dad's old clubs playing the local 9-holer for ten bucks represent the real soul of the game.
The people running the Masters have an obsessive need to exert control. They even resort to ramming their own vocabulary down the throats of all involved:
Patron: Fifty-percent smug Southern geezers fresh from the mausoleum, fifty-percent smug corporate yahoos.
First-cut / Second-cut: apparently the word 'rough' is too base and profane for people of such refined tastes.
Green Jacket: silly outfit guaranteed to look horrible with any other clothes a person chooses to wear.
Member: Super-rich, completely delusional 36 handicapper. Even Hootie admitted recently that most of the members were hackers.
Other than the golf itself, the tournament coverage is boring and repetitive. Each year we are treated to the same old stuff about the drive up Magnolia Lane and we're told about how remarkable it is that the cheese sandwiches are still a buck-and-a-quarter. That thing about the sandwiches...that's just remarkable isn't it?
The threat: the Masters is run by people who make Hitler's associates look like a well balanced bunch of tolerant world citizens. During the 'no female member controversy', poor old Hootie even threatened to stop holding the tournament, like a spoiled and petulant brat telling his playmates that if they didn't shut-up, he'd take his ball home and then nobody could play! He even went so far as to remind everyone that the membership is very rich and doesn't even need the mountains of money the tournament generates. Gee, I never realized they were rich folk, that changes everything! Of course this is a hollow threat, they would never cancel the tournament because it gives them status, which is the one thing these elitists care about more than anything. Is there any more humorless person than Hootie? He makes John Ashcroft look like a comedian. Maybe it's his silly name that made him that way.
At least they stopped dumping tons of blue dye in the water hazards on the back-nine like they did in the past. That looked about as real as the Gilligan's Island set.
I know that people may wonder: if this guy doesn't like the Masters why does he watch it? I watch some of it because I like golf. It's the golf I'm interested in, not all of the hype about the silly traditions and the delusional paranoia of those running the tournament.

Phil. I'm a big Phil hater. He comes off as smug and thats not a trait I like. This does not diminish the fact that he played great this weekend and you cannot take that away from him. Personally, I could care less about gambling and infidelity. Not only is it none of my business, but I'm not necessarily opposed to either of those things. I AM opposed to lieing about them, but who relaly gives a fuck? Phil doesn't owe me a thing, nor I him. So he puts up a veneer for the good of his sponsors - who among us does not realize that advertising is a huge LIE? That's what they do - they convince you to buy things you don't need based on false information. In this case, one of the false pieces of information is that Phil is an angel. This lie helps to sell Bearing Point, Ford and to some degree Callaway (althouhg, really, isn't his gold that sells Callaway?) So I've accepted the Phil as being a fraud on some level - he's a walking-talking advertisement and I'd expect nothing less. As fo his being smug - hey, you can't hide everything. For example, I personally thought it was incredibly inappropriate to bring up Tiger's dads health. It reminded me of when John Edwards brought up Cheney's lesbian daughter in their debate: Dude...you won, ok? Don't kick the guy when he's down. (In Phil's case he won the masters, but certainly not the fanbase or the world ranking or the stats, in JE's case he won the debate, but not the election....althouhg I think those dirty dogs cheated in Ohio and I KNOW the cheated in FLroida).
The masters...good lord the coverage was boring. When theres not drama, at least show us some play from up the field, OK? The should sho ever player at 12 and 16, kinda like the 17th at Sawgrass.
The course lived up to all expectations, though...can't deny that. One day soon the wind will blwo and we WILL see an over par masters and it's very likely that will be the year that the winner comes from outside of the final group....

I will admit I am a huge Fred Couples fan and devastated by his loss to Phil yesterday. Just killed me. But it kills me even more to see fans loving Phil. It reminds me of Jack vs. Arnie....everybody loved Arnie and hated Jack. (much like fans loving Phil and disliking Tiger.) As for the Masters, I sort of agree that it is overhyped. Personally I think the British Open is the most prestigious, followed by the US Open. The Masters has the weakest field of the majors and has the least amount of history behind it. This was the 70th Masters. The Open is being played for about the 135th time, the US Open for the 106th, and the PGA will be played for the 88th time this summer.

I think the reason you're not getting through to people is that a great many answer 'NO' to this question that you posed. For many people, all they are interested in is the athletic performance and decoding the back-story of the individuals is a pointless distraction.
The golf world is known for being particularly disinterested in gossip and details of personal lives of the players. You should check out tennis if this bothers you because it's always been the other way with that sport...many of the fans actually do care who the latest tennis hottie is dating and what they're wearing on a given day.
I can't reveal my source on the black baby in ohio (although they are similarly strong) but i can tell you one of my sources for the gambling thing. When Johnny Miller's book came out last year, he scheduled a book signing for Brentano's books at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles on a Monday night at 6 pm. Well, that was crazy because nobody wants to fight traffic to see Johnny Miller sign books on a Monday night, so very few people showed up. Johnny was so upset about it you could literally see the steam rising from his ever-growing forehead. It was awesome. At any rate, he was being his usual blunt self, only more so. He told us (I swear I am not making this up) about his son who is on a Mormon Mission in Mexico, and how he caught something that made his testicles swell up like softballs. Hilarious. Anyway, he went on to say that Phil was evidently in debt $20 million to several Vegas Casinos. I found out later that Phil got Lou Gerstner (former CEO of IBM) to negotiate it down to $12 million for him, which Callaway then paid. In exchange, Phil had to agree to switch to Callaway right before the Ryder Cup for maximum exposure.

Freddie's nickname was 'baby cakes' and he's one of the few players known to have golf's version of music groupies hanging around him. From the get-go, you have been hell-bent on "attempting" to destroy Phil's image. Whether it's true or not if he is a liar, cheater, gambler, etc... is moot if there are no facts, especially to the casual fan.
If I found out that Phil is a cheater, liar, and his whole image is a fraud, then yes, I would no longer be in his corner for watching him compete, though I would still watch. HOWEVER, I need cold hard facts for me to take this stance.

Golf is desperate for someone to step up and challenge tiger, and maybe, for the next ten years, equal tigers performance. But over ten years time, no1 has come even close, not even close. Give it ten more years? Vijay is on his downhill. Mickelson will weight 100 more pounds. Keep in mind tiger plays far less events per year than mickelson and vijay. Even if mickelson wins four majors in a row, which he wont, he wont win one by fifteen, and then one by eight, then when he absolutely has to make putts to get into a playoff to win another one. tiger may be the only man standing who can stop mickelson from being number one in the world. Tiger has been struggling with his driver, he seems to be improving, once he gets his putting back it is over for everyone. Can you imagine how many putts he missed. Just wait, that's all i can say. i agree with dmc. phil should be held to the same standard as others, and he clearly isn't. shawn kemp's problems with illegitimate kids are all over the press. daly's gambling problems and divorces are there too. but all we hear about phil is what a goody-goody he is, when he clearly isn't. both sides should be reported equally.
