Weir on Wie

Michelle Wie accepted a sponsor's exemption to the play the 84 Lumber Classic on the PGA tour. It has sparked some reaction among PGA players.

Mike Weir: "If they want to give her a shot, that's their prerogative. Do I think it's right all the time? No, I don't. I understand the buzz they're trying to create with Michelle. But at the same time, she hasn't made any cuts. I think maybe it's about time for her to really earn a spot. It would be nice if the tour would step in. There are guys who really need to play, really need events to get in. There are plenty of guys, a lot of my friends, who are in that situation."

Olin Browne: "This is the big leagues, man. I think tournaments should invite players who qualified to play. I don't see any high school kids playing major league baseball."

The Golf Blog: Apparently, Browne is wrong about high school kids playing in MLB. See here.

Not sure I would be using Joe Nuxhall as your example of a high schooler playing major league baseball. For those who do not know the story, during World War 2, the Cincinatti Reds were looking for warm bodies to replace players who were in the service and asked Joe's Dad to play but he refused. Joe was a big kid so they gave him a contract instead. He played in one game, pitched the ninth inning when the team was already down 13-0. Got the first two outs and then got shelled. Gave up 5 earned runs, 5 walks and 2 wild pitches. Did not play again in the majors for 8 years. Had a solid career, 16 seasons, a couple of all star years and once retired went on to be the team broadcaster.

What do expect from 84 Lumber. First they make John Daley's shirts look like he should be making left turns at Bristol Motor Speedway, then they dump a lot of money into a really poor excuse for a golf tournament trying to bring in the big names, and they have already announced this will be their last year to sponsor the tourney, so why not try and rape the cupboard bare while your at it. It's called shock and Aw and it works; if you can't market your product the old fashion way, and you already know there will be no repercussions in future events, try something that will get under everyone’s skin, find a way to make people talk. Any publicity is good publicity. Do you think any of us would be talking about 84 lumber yard and Wie in the same sentence rather less the same week if they did not do something like this? It's a marketing gimmick that all it is. And this crap about "Give the spot to someone that needs it.” Come On! What a crock of Horse crap! Sponsors get exceptions and they don't ever give those exemptions to Joe 277 on the money list, they usually give them to some popular old timers, or past champions or some local Amateur hack none of who will even come close to seeing Saturday, they don't go down the money list and find some chump and make it Christmas in July for him. If you take issue with Billy 254 money list not getting in then your issue is not with Wie or with 84 Lumber your issue is with the PGA allowing sponsors to use the “good old boy” system of getting some of their “friends” on the tee box. These sponsors pay a lot of money on these Tourney and if they want to make it into a circus so they can get some coverage on ESPN then fine with me. I'm just smart enough to see what it is and call a spade a spade. You wont see me buying lumber over this that's for sure, but I will admit when I see John Daley on a golf course I get a hankerin’ for some hot wings, beer and young girls in orange shorts that are two sizes too small. One more thing, why all the sudden we are going to run 84 Lumber across the coals, Wie is playing in the John Deere Classic AGAIN this year so why not run the Green and Yellow boys out to the podium and ask them some questions as well.

Side Note: Found a way to tell the difference between Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen thanks to a few back to back episodes of Full House and Tivo. Farts are smelling like black liquorish and orange juice. While looking for my skycaddie this evening I found a 40once I lost a few years ago, poured some out to my homies’ and drank the rest.

Michelle Wie needs to win a LPGA Tournament before she thinks about steping foot on a PGA Tournament's first tee. Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel are better than her anyway.

Mike Weir is a whiner ... plus, he's Canadian, so we know his opinion shouldn't count.

As for Olin Browne, is there anyone besides friends and family who buys a ticket to watch him play?

Michelle Wie gets invited to these events because she sells tickets -- period. If someone could teah an elephant to hit 300-yard drives, then Jumbo would be getting sponsor exemptions, too!

(Lastly -- Morgan Pressel better than Wie? She's a snot-nosed cry-baby, too!)

Morgan Pressel better than Michelle Wie? Excuse me for a second...hahahahahahahahahahaha! Put down the bong and back away slowly, dude! Hilarious!!

Pressel is a short, whinging, loudmouthed, "rhymes with" mike, who hits it 220.

Nice history lesson, andrewsdad. Well done.

And although I'm not going to bash Wie or pressel, as they are both great talents for their age who have helped to elevate interest in the LPGA, I do have to agree with Kidd. The sponsors pay a large amount of money to run a tournament for advertising reasons as well as an interest in supporting the growth of golf (or so I am lead to believe). In the same sense, sponsors exemptions are solely to the discretion of the sponsors, and if they wish to allow a local club pro, a celebrity, or a female elevated by the media hype, so be it. It is their choice. And as Kidd stated, very seldom does an individual ever receive a a needed spot in the field unless he is a past champion. Otherwise, what does the exemption do to help the sponsor?

You have to imagine that Weir is only expressing the opinion of a majority of golfers on the PGA Tour, but he only is using the excuse that he wants a player that needs the exemption to receive it. The truth is likely that the players as a majority feel one of two ways:
1) Giving the sponsor's exemption to a girl lowers the quality of their tour.
2) They don't want to have to deal with the press release the following day listing what pros tied or were beaten by Wie.

How about kidd giving daily updates on the smells eminating in his house. At first, not funny. Now...becoming amusing, or at least impressive regarding the creativity. I would love to get his commentary on his top 5 favorite LPGA players and why. why do I get the feeling Meg Mallon won't be on it? Oh, and Sarah Lee (14th in money) should be, because as we all know, "Everyone loves Sarah Lee."

Let the Tour figure out how to make some money, you nimrods. Then you can continue to take home $100k for finishing 20th. Olin Browne. What a moron.

I totally agree with Weir. This whole thing with Wie or any women playing the PGA is getting stupid. If they must, she should qualify first! Why don't guys from the Canadian tour or Asian tour or the mens Amateur winner go for the $$'s or the glory and try to qualify for an LPGA event? BECAUSE THEY WON'T LET THEM and they'd be crazy if they did.
What Brown should have said was he doesn't see any high school GIRLS playing MLB.

There was the situation, at the last Sony Open, could have been the one a year earlier, where Dean Wilson was forced to Monday qualify because he was not given an exemption, even though he is the only PGA player from Hawaii. He was something like 130th on the money list so was not fully exempt and was too far down the list to get in based on rankings.

If there is a poster boy for Weir's comments, it would be Dean Wilson. That being said, I have no problem with the sponsers giving an exemption to whomever they want, it just seems to me that if someone gets exemption after exemption, at some point they need to start making a cut, especially if they are not a past champion or have a strong connection to the location or tournament. And as soon as I pony up the cash to be a sponser, that will be how I do it.

A sponsor's exemption is given to the sponsor as part of their sponsorship package. They use those spots as they see fit. By definition, people don't 'qualify' for those spots, they are 'given'. Many times they are given to people who the sponsor thinks will increase attention to the event. This is particularly important for the lesser events on the PGA Tour, of which the '84 Lumber' is an example.

It isn't about right or wrong, who qualifies and who doesn't.

Like it or not, MW is 1000 times more famous than the average tour journeyman or newcomer who really wants that spot, so the sponsor is better served giving her the spot.

The whole system of sponsor's exemptions is muddying the waters. What other sport has them. It's not a question of sex or age, it's all about whether you are good enough to compete. The PGA's tag-line is "These Guys are Good". So every time someone who's not good gets to play, it can't be good for the game.

An acquaintance of mine is on the Canadian tour and has tried to get his card through Q school etc. It is very difficult, costly and time-consuming to accomplish. I can only imagine what lower-echelon golfers on tour feel like when they see Wie "butt" in line. Yeah she's good but not good enough to be at a PGA event.

Just a bunch of goofs who defend Wie on the PGA tour - you have to learn to walk before you can run - as for Mike Weir, he's a gentleman on the tour and his perspective is an honest one. The general feeling of most - male and female - is not anti-Wie, but anti this dog and pony show. Wie could help the woman's tour tremendously with her talent and charisma. End of story.
