Is Phil more loved by NY fans than Tiger?

Here's an interesting article by Ron Croichick of the Chronicle comparing Phil's popularit to Arnold Palmer's:

At any rate, Mickelson's connection with New Yorkers, and fans across the land, only fuels his renewed rivalry with Woods. The parallels to Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer are valid -- Woods, like Nicklaus, as the uber-focused No. 1 player in the world, largely conservative in his on-course decisions, and Mickelson, like Palmer, as the people's choice challenger, swinging from his heels and firing at the flag.

Mickelson has toned down his aggressive play the past few years, but he openly emulates Palmer in one respect. Two years ago, before the Open at Shinnecock, Mickelson talked about seeing Palmer sign autographs for 90 minutes during the 1994 Open at Oakmont. That scene, Mickelson said, convinced him to use Palmer as a role model in the way he interacted with fans.

And now, not coincidentally, they love him -- especially in New York.

"Winged Foot is going to be huge," Steffen said. "It's going to be out of control."

Who is the most popular golfer? I think it depends where you are. When I went to the British Open in 2003, there seemed to be no doubt that Tiger was the most popular. At times, it seems like John Daly might be the most popular, and then the Hefty Lefty certainly has his legions of fans. I think you can argue that the most popular player out there might still be Fred Couples. I think that he is the sentimental choice among most fans.

I think my favorite for the week is Monty. I know that he can be surly, but he's always received a raw deal from the fans here in the US. No doubt the "classy" NY fans will give him a hard time this week, and because I hate the mentality of NY sports fans, I hope Monty can give them all something to choke on this week.

Where on earth do writers get this swashbuckling image of Phil? I think they're just dying for a charismatic rival to Tiger, so they invented one. Phil's a great player, but he's no Arnold Palmer, OMG.

I don't see anyone out there, other than Tiger, who even comes close to the energy and charisma and showmanship of Arnold, or Chi Chi, or Lee Trevino, or Gary Player, or Jack (later), or Greg Norman, or Fuzzy, or Freddy, or etc., etc., etc. The Tour is in a charisma slump--it's why Veejay isn't more popular. zzzzzzzz.

That's why guys like Fred Funk stick out so much...he's just regular, happy guy, happy to be there. Most of the other players need to wash the starch out of their underwear...and Phil needs to rinse it off his never-fading, eerie smile.

Tiger is always #1. I understand why people like "regular joes" who are fat and/or flawed, but I think the majority of people want to see someone who is the just "the best".
Call me crazy, but I respect a guy more that takes what they do seriously enough to prepare properly for it. If you're a professional athlete, and you're not in great shape, you're lazy. Laziness leaks into other areas, such as mental discipline. That's where Tiger will beat Phil every day of the week, and has.

That's an excellent point, Ryan. I really do not like seeing flabby golfers. Makes me kind of ashamed to be so into the sport. Also, it's just too bad that Duval's game went south when he lost weight. But you know, if you grow up chubby and form all your habits as a chubby guy, being skinny must be tough to adjust to.
