Big golf week on tap ... predictions?

Following up an exciting U.S. Women's Open championship, this coming Thursday starts exciting events for three tours:

  • The men play the Western Open with both Tiger and Phil in the field.
  • The women play their World Match Play Championship with Annika and Michelle seeded 1 and 2.
  • The seniors play the U.S. Senior's Open with Fred Funk joining the elder statesmen.

I will make the (bold?) prediction that none of the persons named in this post will be taking home a trophy on Sunday.

I just played the #4 course over at Cog Hill, and if you have never seen it in person, there are a few things to realize while watching.
First off, it is a great design. Sure, it is one of the shortest courses in the rotation, and since they had most of the pro tees closed in preparation, it played even shorter for myself. But the way the course sits in front of you, and the slope of each fairway in relation to the shape of the hole, it was truly one of my favorite designs I have yet played.
The wind can be tough, as I experienced, but the rough is as close to U.S. Open length as I have ever seen on a day to day basis. The length will make this less of a factor for the pros, but it makes holding the greens rather difficult. I spent way too much time looking for balls in the rough even though I knew exactly where it should be.
The reason I went to Chicago was because I had the opportunity to play the Chicago Golf Club, an exclusive private course, and it has become one of the top three courses I have ever played. As close to Irish golf as I have ever played (including Bandon and Newport).

I live, literaly, just down the street from Hamilton Farm Golf Club. The fairways are generous, and the course isn't overly long. This should play into the hands of Wie. If she can stick her wedge shots, and continue to improve on her putting...she might have a shot at it. I'm sure her length will be quite intimidating to her match play opponents.

I'll be there on Saturday & Sunday, hopefully I can write up a little review!

I disagree that a short course plays to Wie's advantage. The longer the course is playing the more it favors a bomber. In my opinion, Wie's problems have been her short irons, putter and her head.

Although it looks like the Americans have a solid shot at another win as the top 2 seeds are US citizens.
