Tiger Woods = flawless
From tee to green, Tiger Woods was flawless today, finishing the tourney at -18. Although he only won by two strokes over a gutsy Chris DiMarco (-16), Tiger was in total control the entire final round.
Never using driver, Tiger put on the most flawless display of golf shotmaking that I have ever witnessed. If you missed it, you missed pure perfection.
Afterwards, Tiger broke down and wept. (Photo here)

Seems like most people have missed the significance of this tournament. Tiger essentially removed his driver from the bag (hit it once) and won the British Open by two strokes! In other words, Tiger can hit long irons better than the world can hit mid irons, and he can hit mid irons better than the world can hit short irons. The driver is the most dominant club in the history of golf, and he took it OUT! Truly an amazing accomplishment!
Like there should ever have been a question about that. I remember David Tom's making a statement shortly after his PGA Chanpionship win that he couldn't compete with Tiger because of Tiger's length off the tee. I thought, Buddy, give me a big tournament and I'll drop Tiger's ball 30 yards behind yours in every fairway. Then I'll bet everything I own on Tiger to kick your butt anyway.
By the way, this may mark the end of another semi-knock on Tiger as well. Previously, 6 of his 10 majors had been won on only 2 courses, Augusta and St. Andrews. It's getting tougher and tougher to argue he's not that great off of those two courses.
Can we all bow down together now, at last, and acknowledge fealty to the greatest?
I still say one of the great ironies of this is that Tiger actually needs Phil, Vijay or Ernie, the only 3 major winners, to each win 2 more majors at least. That's the last semi-legit knock against Tiger in his comparisons with Jack. That Jack played against better players. Tiger won't admit it, but I bet he was rooting for Phil to win at Winged Foot after he shot himself out of it.
One more thing, if Tiger keeps this up the "quality" of his major wins might be an argument in his favor vrs Jack. I believe 5 of Jack's majors were PGA Championships. If at the end of it, Tiger can bag more US Opens and British Opens, it going to look stronger on his resume.
Tiger is king.
Poor Phil Mickelson. Instead of having won 3 in a row (PGA, Masters, U.S. Open), he's been overshadowed again by Tiger Woods. I think that's the end of Phil major run. Tiger's back.
How about Tiger snapping at that spector for taking a picture of him with is camera phone? Or how the media hardly even covers DiMarco losing his father recently as well?
The people of Liverpool got embarrassed by the behavior of many of the fans attending the event. The behavior of the idiots defacing the 18th green was typical of the behavior of many people in the gallery all week.
I can't speak for the people of Liverpool and am not sure if it really was all that bad this year. The demonstrators defacing No. 18 hole shouldn't be attributed to the entire people of Liverpool.
Last year when I walked St. Andrews, the Scottish people I met were so wonderful and friendly. Everyone with a camera phone was snapping pictures. That's just what the atmosphere was like, so unless they ban cell phones, the players are going to have to live with it.
The one thing that I would point out is that taking the driver out of the bag may have been the only reason Tiger won. The only driver he hit was so far off line that it ended up being playable. Until he solves his driver issues he is going to have a serious problem winning other majors that require him to use the driver.
I'm not knocking on Tiger. In fact, I think the fact he won tells everyone how great he is. All I'm saying is I want to see what he can do when he has to use his driver comming down the stretch.
DiMarco's father was right there at Hoylake this week. The American TV cameras gave him several significant stretches of on-air time.
DiMarco's MOTHER recently passed away. The media has made more than a little mention of that...
Quite a victory for Tiger. Sorry to see Demarco couldn't get it done. All the players deserve great respect. When you think about it, Golf is the hardest competitive sport. Every stroke counts!
I'm 67 years old and never watched a golf match until today. I was amazed at Tiger's control! Amazing! His humanity was also amazing.
The Sports Ghouls Rule at the British Open
They could hardly contain their excitement at the British Open. Who? The Fans? No. All the little sports ghouls at ABC who couldn't contain themselves. Unlimited and ungodly references flew through the airwaves that the winner's father was dead.
But in their view, the perfect storm of all sports cynicism had arrived. It came with the opportunity, freely and frequently taken, to mention that the runner-up's mother had just died a week ago.
You could almost see them metaphorically dancing on the graves of Tiger Woods father, and Chris DiMarco's mother. They're doing it over at ABC's affiliate, ESPN.com, right now.
Did Woods genuinely feel the loss of his father at a moment of triumph? Of course. Did Mike Tirico, Terry Gannon or any of the other 'reporters' who it mentioned fifty times? Come on.
DiMarco looked sober, reflective and dignified while discussing the loss of his mother in his interview with Gannon after the match. Did Gannon and his cohorts who mentioned it fifty times? Gimme a break.
Week after week, especially at pro golf tournaments where there is so little to say, the ghouls look for the person upon whom they can focus their crocodile tears, while cynically hoping it boosts their ratings.
Tiger's father died over two months ago, and the sports ghouls still won't let him rest in peace. When Tiger missed the cut at the U.S. Open they still played "highlights" of his relationship with his deceased dad over and over to try to hold audience share.
I remember when Stuart Appleby tragically lost his young wife one year. For that whole year the sports ghouls on all three networks piously, without the least bit of regard for Appleby, mentioned it every time he played.
This weekly disgrace and cynical exploitation in the sports world really needs to stop.
Don't blame the others for coming up short, they were out played by perhaps the best golfer to play the game in recent times. I've only played golf once, and what I saw tiger do this week was nothing less than extraordinary!
does anyone else see Sergio Garcia as a big whiner? I was happy to see him go down today!
I wonder if this sort of play will take off in more PGA tour play here back on US soil. I mean where the Driver is used less and more of an emphasis played on hitting fairways and staying out of trouble. With today's tournaments raising the level of difficults by raising the rough, this could be the start of a new playing strategy.
Tiger is truely an amazing man and golfer. What he has accomplished in his career so far is remarkable. He has taken golf to a new level and I think he hasn't reached his peak. Bigger and better things to come from Tiger.
Tiger BIRDIED the hole he hit driver on. He easily could have won this tournament with his driver as well. Sorry, but your a huge fool to say he won because he didn't hit the driver. So how did he win the other 10? Oh your right, US Opens don't have narrow fairways with heavy rough! Oh, you mean you used to be able to hit a driver, but now he can't...he can only hit the best long irons in the history of the game, but the poor fool can't hit a driver....your so right!
