Woods has a 7-11-2 record across 4 matches. Nicklaus's record is across 6 matches.
Three questions:
1. Why did Nicklaus make so few appearances, especially none before 1969? I think I read an explanation about this once, but can't remember and my google search didn't throw anything up on this. Was it something to do with the eligibility rules back then (i.e. membership of the PGA or something)?
2. Wasn't it disingenuous of Woods to make his comment about no-one knowing Jack's ryder cup record? They might not have known that it was 17-8-3 but they'd have known that (a) it was impressive, (b) about Nickalus conceding that putt to Jacklin in 1969, and (c) that Nicklaus really cared about the Ryder Cup.
3. Does anyone think Tiger might one day skip the Ryder (or for that matter Presidents) Cup? Do you think he actually enjoys the Cup? Would it help if Woods more obviously had an unofficial leadership role within the US team a la Monty within the European team?
Does anyone doubt that Tiger would go 0-X-0 for the next every "Cup" if it gave him another major?
Also, I don't expect him to win at Firestone -- I think the last year has been too draining for him. I expect he'll work on hitting driver this week, make more bogeys...
I don't think that Tiger will ever skip the cup competitions, because of their connections with golf history, and I believe that Tiger wants to be a historical figure.
Also, the tag line chasing him around for the rest of time if he did something like that would be "Jack never skipped the Ryder cup".

And the point of this piece of information is...?
Tiger has defended his Ryder Cup record by asking if anyone knows Jack Nicklaus's Ryder Cup record.
Niklaus has a better record does he not?
I'm not sure what Tiger's record is in the Ryder Cup.

Good point - but what about the Presidents Cup?
