The return of Sergio's scissor kick?

AP's Doug Ferguson has an excellent article recounting the emergence of Sergio Garcia at the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah, where the tournament returns this week. That's where we first got to see the 19 year old Sergio and to witness his scissor kick on the 16th hole after he hit an amazing shot from the trees with his eyes closed. Sergio's scissor kick was the Most Memorable Non-golf Shot in the past decade. But, unfortunately, El Nino hasn't used it since. Nor has he won a major.

I love how one reporter will mention something, and the topic-starved press leap at the idea. Such as the idea that Sergio "has" to win a major, or "should" or is failing because he hasn't! Who said? Who said he's that good?

Good is as good does, folks. Period.

Which brings me to myth #2: Tiger vs. Phil. There is simply no contest. When he's on, Tiger eats the field and Phil for lunch. When Tiger is off, he still wins, unless he isn't playing.

I think a number of players got big heads when Tiger was down over the past year or so with his changing swing, marriage, and father’s death. Vijay, particularly, went crazy with confidence, but it all turned to vapor when Tiger roared back into form. Phil is no different. Phil went crazy with practice routines and, to me, over-indulgence of his own hype. Sure, he’s an excellent player—when he’s playing well, which is streaky.

That is why there are record books. Those are the facts, not the players' "potential," or "image" or "hype" or "missed opportunities." Good is as good does. Great is as Great does. And Tiger gets it done.

While I've gone on and on about Medinah on my web site, having played it a few weeks ago (and Chicago Golf Club...a course in a different league:better), I am excited to see the top guys work it around the course. Love that they kept the par 5s as such, and didn't make it a par 70, and it shows that it will be a major venue for years to come.
The greens will eat Sergio unless he pulls a Dimarco (Presidents Cup) and finds his A-game.
Tiger can work the ball, and will be tough to beat (big surprise there).
And don't expect the length to mean much, and look for a straight hitter like Donald and Furyk to compete well.

Great tract, for sure. I'd love to see Sergio win, then leap on the green like he's on a trampoline. It would be a wonderful story for him to beat a field like that, especially with Tiger playing lights-out. Others are playing well too...should be a great tourney.

Say, does anyone have XM satellite radio and listen to golf on it? Is it any good, enjoyable, a waste?

I've never had XM or sattelite radio, but when I was working in Port Arhur, TX, one of the TV CBS TV station's audio would come in on one of the FM channels. I really liked listening to the golf when it was on as I was driving and running errands --and that's with a TV audio. I'm sure that the radio cast would be a lot more descriptive.

Then again, I'm also the kind of guy that would rather listen to NASCAR on the radio than watch it on TV.

Those were the days, where you could wear soccer jerseys to play golf. Ahh.
