62 + 61 = We're back

Annika Sorenstam shot a 10-under 62 yesterday to win the State Farm Classic in Illinois by two strokes over Cristie Kerr.

Meanwhile, in rainy weather in Boston, Vijay Singh shot a course record 61 to go -11 and to pull a 3-stroke lead over Tiger Woods and Justin Rose, who are back at -8. Vijay and Tiger will be playing in the final group, together again. Any predictions? Can Vijay put an end to Tiger's win streak? And who will be sporting better facial hair, Tiger or Vijay?

The amazing thing about both of those rounds was how far lower they were than the rest of the fields. I had said to myself before the LPGA 4th round started that Sorenstam would not only have to shoot low but hope the rest of the field does not follow. She started the round T-9 so in addition to having to makeup 5 strokes on the leader, she had to make up 4 on the players @ T-2, 3 on the players T-3, etc. All it would have taken was for one player sitting a couple of slots ahead of her to also go low and she does not walk away with the trophy and the State Farm bonus money.

Now this next comment touches on a previous post about the money disparity between tours. I was somewhat surprised that the winning check was less than 200K. But then when I turned on the telecast, on ESPN2, I saw Sorenstam had started fast but was still 3 shots behind and when she missed a birdie on #10, I figured it was a long shot. I then decided to go to the range but also set Tivo to record, knowing full well when I got back I would first check the scores on the internet and then depending on the outcome, maybe watch it, fast forwarding through 90% of the show.

Now the reality for me is I watch about as much golf as anyone I know and I can not think of anyone I know who watches LPGA golf. In fact I am only going to watch the LPGA under certain circumstances. If Sorenstam is in contention I will watch. I learn more that will help my game watching her than any other player, male or female, with the exception of this video. If its a major and multiple big names are playing, if there is a compelling story such as Wie or maybe Gulbis looks like they will get a first win, then most likely I will watch. If it is Miyazato and Pressel and one of the South Korean Lees fighting it out, sorry, not watching. Would I have gone to the range if Tiger was 3 out with 8 to play? Not a chance, and I like Sorenstam better than Woods... see here.

If the LPGA can only get me to watch in certain limited situations, then maybe $195,000 is the correct amount for the winners check.

HIGH FIVE FOR TIGER. Gentlemen, talk no more to me about Phil.

The only way to take down Tiger is in small bites. It's called match play. Can you say "Ryder Cup?"

I expect the most electric Cup yet. Can't wait!
