Michelle Wie on the Ryder Cup?

OK, I've heard enough talk about Tiger already. So the guy's good, we know that. But he doesn't deserve all the attention.

I couldn't resist commenting about Michelle Wie's press conference today in Europe, where she will play with the men this week. Not only does she want to play competitively against the men, she also hopes to make the Ryder Cup one day. Is she serious? She hasn't even made a PGA cut yet, much less win the Women's U.S. Amateur. What kind of street cred does she have in match play and team play competition? Zilch.

My response to comments. Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. I'm so glad we stopped talking about Tiger, I love the guy, but I think the media like to hype him way too much. I also wanted to respond to one suggestion that Michelle Wie was only being sarcastic. She wasn't. Just listen to her comment, there's not a trace of sarcasm in it:

"Hopefully, I will be able to play the Ryder Cup one day, that would be awesome and I think it is totally possible. Anything is possible in the future ... we are starting to get stronger and work out more and are mentally tough and we can do it."

I did agree with the one commenter that it would interesting to see Annika Sorenstam as a captain's pick in the Ryder Cup. She would bring a lot of team competition experience with her.

PLEASE give up on the Women's Amateur angle ... that train left the station a long time ago!

And PLEASE remember, she is just 16 YEARS OLD!!

(Or has she turned 17? Maybe next month ...)

The operative words here are, "one day" so who knows when and like the other guy said, "she is just 16 YEARS OLD!!".

Whatever... all I know is, she'll look good doin' it! :)

Not to put too much into idle talk, but really the young woman has to start focusing on being one of the best the LPGA, or she'll start to sound real silly in a couple of years.

Taking it seriously, what would Michelle really bring to the table in the Ryder Cup? She's not as long as any of the other guys --even Jim Furyjk has a longer driving average than her. She's not a good putter, and her mid-range game doesn't get her in close enough for birdie chances. At times she can scramble well, but in all I don't think she has a lot of mental toughness.

Now if the Euros were to bring in Annika Sorenstam as a captians pick (obviously, two years from now), I think that could be an interesting movie. I'd think she'd be a hell of a partner in alternate shot and the pressure of playing her in singles would be overwhelming because "you don't want to lose to a woman". She'd be a much better Ryder Cupper than Wie.

I'd replace one of the rookies with Wie this year. To be honest, I think the European team will be preoccupied with her phenominal body to play any golf.

First of all, NuggMeister, she's 17 so take the pedophelia outside will you.

Ok, when I heard this last night I experienced mixed emotions...anger and laughter. There is no chance in hell that Michelle Wie will EVER make the Ryder Cup team, unless she qualifies and we all know that is NEVER going to happen. No way, no how. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that she will play in the Ryder Cup. Are we seriously having this discussion? Maybe Michelle Wie was being sarcastic...yep, that must be it.

What's more ridiculous, her saying it or the people on this blog defending it? That's really the question.

Can Wie please EARN something first????

What airhead said that Tiger doesn't *deserve* all the hype? That's the most ridiculous, juvenile statement I've heard in years. Of course he deserves the hype, acclaim, and trophies! He's earned it all! It's fascinating and unprecendented.

And just because Tiger gets written about for superhuman golfing feats, doesn't mean the rest of the golfing world is ignored. But let's not invent silly fantatsies about wannabes or bad-mouth Tiger for winning.

Wie is a media creation. She was portrayed as the talented underdog from the beginning, which gets all the sympathy. Unfortunately, she put herself in improbable situations where she STAYED the underdog. Her career choices have made her millions of dollars, but zero respect.

From DAY ONE, Tiger was in the news because he was winning...and continues to win. And when he stops winning, he'll STILL be in the news because he won it all.

Some blogs just throw up ridiculous controversies just to keep the traffic up. This blog has become one of them. It's too bad. I was looking forward to a great Ryder Cup discussion here. That is now spoiled by your Wie Wie Wie Mentality.

Caly, once again, you said it perfectly.

Well, I do agree that this blog is going downhill fast. It says a lot about people that they'd rather bash Michelle Wie for a harmless comment than praise Tiger.

Note that no, I don't think that it could really happen, but all she's saying is that she thinks it's possible one day.

Ok. Any of guys been a child before?

When your kid tells you that she wants to be an astronaut or a professional athlete, what would tell your kid?

"Sorry, but it can't be done."?

I saw a video clip of Michelle back in 2000. She was still an unknown then and she told in an interview that she wants to compete with the men. I laughed when I saw that clip. I'm really not laughing now because it looks like a realistic goal.

She's not a PGA Tour, or even Nationwide Tour, caliber yet but she can definitely compete with other boys her age.

The older Michelle gets, the more she'll realize what is attainable or not.

For the meantime, let her chase her dreams.

This just in, breaking new scandal in sports from Switzerland, bigger than doping scandals...

16 year voices big dream! Experts say it may even be UNREALISTIC.

Stop the presses.

If Tim Schoch or any of the other voices bemoaning the content in this web-log have alternative web-logs that they produce on golf, I'd be interested in looking at them.

I myself tried producing a web-log, and wasn't dedicated enough to provide enough interesting content to really make it worthwhile. While on all web-logs there is some fluff, I credit these people for putting out content near-daily.

This Michelle Wie reality show has got to stop.
The media is trying to do build her into something she is not.
Like they tried to do with Sergio Garcia vs Tiger. Remember that!!
The golfing public knows one thing for certain - RESULTS!
No doubt she is good, but really all the golfers, men and women are talented.
I know she has been close, but close doesn't cut it.
And one more thing about Michelle Wie. Her handlers have to reign in her comments. ie: "I missed some key putts, "my drives went left", etc. "otherwise I played pretty well"

It's not wrong for a kid to dream, for crying out loud. It is wrong for the press to treat it like news and give it credibility. And it's a waste of time on this shrinking blog. How old are you guys, anyway?

Michelle, despite what is said here, is NOT competing with the men. NOt even close. She's trying to make some cuts.

I don't watch golf to listen to the dreams of kids, then make them millionaires because the press likes a good old-fashioned fantasy.

I have kids, and I know a lot of kids her age, and I know plenty of kids with bigger dreams than she has, and more realistic ones, too. But where's their money? Where's the press? You can't apologize for her age, then turn around and give her money for being ridiculously young-minded and having peeps who encourage her leaps into youthfully exuberant and self-centered foolishness. Then again, I guess they can. It's good TV. She is, of course, being used.

Michelle has been urged to put herself up on a pedestal, and it is a shame. She has no realistic grasp on true achievement and honor and accomplishment. And she's failing so flatly that soon all her golf balls will be on big rubber bands, so when she hits a bad shot she can snap it back and say "Do over!" until she gets it right. Meanwhile, she's driving her caddies to psychiatrist couches.

Well..at least she doesn't want to jump to the moon. Then, Nike or Etonic, backed by TGC and Big Break XXXXI, would trying like hell to develop golf shoes with immense springs. Because when Michelle says jump...(you know the rest)

Who remembers Flubber?

Rumor has it that Lehman actually did consider Wie for a wildcard pick.

Wie should dream.
Wie should then work at achieving that dream.
If I want to be an astronaut I don't start by hanging out at launchpads. School, internships, accomplishments, achievements lead to the dream...aka amatuer, LPGA, then maybe even Nationwide. Having potential doesn't mean being great.
And just to beat another dead horse..Tiger deserves the attention. What he has done this year is phenomenol. And if you don't get it, then you must not be a golfer.

Wie is still a teenager and WE! are talking about her. At the same age Woods had dreams which he WOULD realize. The girl has charm, courage and still a few years before she reaches her full potential. I hope she will realize all her dreams, it WOULD be wonderful or should I say it WILL be wonderful.

are you kidding suggesting that annika be a captains pick? she didn't make the cut in the one pga event that she played in.

and as for wie, she shouldn't be dreaming about the ryder cup - she can't seem to break thru on the lpga - she has had her chances and the only thing that she consistantly shows is that she is not ready to win yet - too many mental errors.

team wie was very effective in getting her fat endorsement money, but they have been totally ineffective in helping her direct her career in a systematic and intelligent way. hype only goes so far. she needs to deliver - she is young and her very fragile career is becoming more and more fragile every day.

the best thing she can do for herself his to "sean o'hair" bj and send him back home to live his own life, so she can live her's.

she should also dump leadmonster. look what he's done for charlie howell. zip, my friend, zip.

i myself long for simpiler days when all these professional trainer, coaches, psychologists, swing guru's and other asshole weren't in the picture. they are all making big money fucking up the talent that is out there. i'd love to see an analysis of how scores have come down (or not) as a result of all these assholes and their six and seven figure fees.

nobody does anything for themself anymore, except chris dimarco who does't go for any of that shit. he is my hero and i predict will break thru very soon and become a multiple major winner - i cn't wait till he kicks the shit out of team mickelson at the us open or the pga.

the hell with wie, it is this new system that is the problem. let's stop listening to the guru's and realize that the new ball technology and the equipt. have a lot more to do with player development and ability v. their f'in bullshit advice.

ok i'm finished - boy did that feel good.

slammer out!!!!

BJ knows ya got to make hay while the sun shines. The older Wie gets the less the sun will shine. Why does she play against the men and doesn't mind coming in dead last? Duh, did ya ever hear about appearance fees? Last year and yes this year the kid who can't seem to win ( but does have heat and shoes to blame ) will get over a million bucks just to show up at the Casio World Open in Japan in Nov like she did last year. Wish I could come in as a also ran and pick up a easy million. Ever hear of a 16 year old Ty Tyron? Joined the tour at 16 and where is poor old Ty now? How about a new name for the PGA called the MPGA with the M standing for Mens. BJ and Wie would pitch a fit but I would love it!
