Should Jack or Tiger mentor Wie?
All the interesting comments in the last two posts highlight that everyone has opinions about Michelle Wie's career choices. But, in all reality, there are only a few people on this planet who can really grasp and assess what Wie could and should be doing in golf in the months and years ahead.
Two names that jump to mind, not only for their golf ability but also for their professional and personal judgment, are Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. In the wake of Wie's sad showing this week in Europe, is it time for Jack or Tiger to reach out to Wie and offer to serve as a mentor?

Being qualified has never been a prerequisite for giving advice and pointers in golf. :-)
The Bear and Tiger reaching out to her? Why do they have to take the initiative? It's her game and career; let her seek out the help she needs if she wants it. Or not. Her mistakes to make.

She already has a coach. His name is David Leadbetter. If Leadbetter doesn't have the guts to give Wie's parents some good advice on not subjecting Michelle to pointless exercises with the men, then he should resign.
Well why doesn't she try to beat the women before she tries working on the men? Last I checked Sorinstan was still the best woman golfer. That is not advice, I just think it is common sense, but common sense is not common.
A few months ago, I read an analysis of how Tiger's father (Earl) used to set a reachable goal for young Tiger, have him make it, and then raise the bar up to the next goal. That progressively built up Tiger's mental strength and confidence. Both of which are key ingredients for succesful longevity in the game of golf. And payoff even more when you reach your 20s and 30s (as we're seeing with Tiger's recent streak).
In the case of BJ (Michelle's father), he is using a "physical" sport mental theory - which is set the bar high enough and have the athlete keep jumping until he/she reaches it. That is fine for developping physical prowess (basketball, pitching etc) but in the game of golf, it completely destroys the player because it does not help build his/her mental strength. If anything, it destroys it with each try (i.e. a missed cut in Michelle's case).
Though Earl did not have the "professor" credentials of BJ, he also did not have the professorial arrogance of the "I know better". Earl having been a green beret facing attack and fire was much more humble at accepting others' input and studied it with a great deal of depth - not the case for BJ.
And in the end both golf prodigies (Tiger and Michelle) are only the result of their fathers' diligence at studying the mental game and accepting input from others.
BJ will eventually drive his daughter to rebellion or burnout. (See Sean O'Hair on the men's side)
So I don't think BJ will ever relinquish his control of his daughter to accept mentoring from Jack or Tiger; Leadbetter is only her swing coach.
Not sure why Jack or Tiger would want to do that. They are professional golfers not career counselors.
My guess is about 10 minutes in they would realize that their goal in golf, winning tournaments and majors, is not Michelle's goal and at that point when the advisor and student are not pointed in the same direction, it is not possible to accomplish anything.
Mentoring is not coaching. In his post-tourney press conference, Tiger said that Michael Jordan was like a mentor to him and that he (Tiger) was fortunate to have been taken by MJ under his wing and mentored him in many aspects of his pro career since he got on tour 10 yrs ago. And Earl was still alive...
The TGB post is valid in the sense that neither Jack or Tiger would be coaches, instead they'd be mentors Michelle can go to or call for career advice.
My comment is that BJ her dad would never allow that, since he wants complete control of this young player...no outside advice besides his.
Rather than Tiger (he seems a little busy) or Jack, how about one of the LPGA greats? Perhaps Nancy Lopez...
why should tiger or jack care. they are not career councilors and why should they put time into someone with such an arrogant know-it -all father.
bottom line is this. she got $10 million in endorsements and has made committments she needs to honor. so it is not as simple as - just go develop on the lpga tour. sad to say she is now becoming a boring story. nobody cares much anymore.
reminds me of all the hype a few years ago around ty tryon - remember him - where is he now - too bad he didn't listen to the advice he got from pro's to go to college and develop his game and learn how to win.
this is such an old, sad story. maybe as wie grows up and matures she will be able to minimize the role of dr. wie who is having the time of his life living thru his daughter. that is also another sad, sad story
bj should concentrate on his own hang ups and leave his daughter alone.
maybe he needs to get a bj, or a table dance, or have a tea bag session with a tender young strumpet, or he should find a niplet to give him a blumpkin, or he should stay home and wack it or he should hire his own swing coach or better yet hire leadbetter to work on his game - maybe he can wear a hat like david's and look just as goofy as leadbetter does.
OK, I think that Wie needs DESPERATELY the help of Jack...
...JACK BAUER!!!
why does everyone go after michelle wie, there are other stars on the LPGA that are struggling like natilie gulbis. so why is no one talking and in a matter of speaking attacking this other struggling stars?
i think michelle should go home and deflate, put bj on ice and fire her guru's.
why are these guy's guru's. has anyone even taken a serious look at these knuckleheads - leadbetter looks like the king of the nerds - i'm pretty sure he was the "nerd guru" consultant for those movies and how about dave "the winnie" pells - this guy should be selling used cars or maybe doing ginsu knife commercials.
why do the pro's give these guys so much $$ and street cred. leadmonster has done such a great job w/ chuck howell and wiesie. team mickelson lead by smith and pells may have worked for a brief moment but look at philly man boobs now - he looks like a guy lost in his own wierd world of self absorption. all phil needs is an occasional smack in the head from amy and to wipe that goofy look off his face. i ask you all to think about this the next time phil is in contention in a major - look at his posture and composure v. tiger or remember the look that "the fat man" or johnny miller or watson had when they were in contention in a major. those guys didn't need to be shrunk or team "mickelstoned" like phil. fact is he is a self destructive guy and he can't help but push the wheels off when victory lane is in sight. he has the look of a guy who has been gurued into space and his oxygen mask has fallen off.
the guru's have helped an few but have screwed up many. they are no different than the marketing crowd - they are all marketing and pr men - in fact their real clients are themselves.
when the pro's learn to follow iron man chris dimarco's lead and realize that the "emperor has no clothes" maybe they will truly play in ther present moment and bank the money that these charlatan's are stealing from them.
lemmings, my friends, we are really witnessing the age of marketing man in guru suits holding the hands of very wealthy lemmings as they, together, jump off the cliffs chanting mindless affirmations to the guru's themselves - the guru's land on a pillow of cash while the lemming's splatter on the ground next to them - then the guru's scRAPE the lemmings up and proclaim that they can fix what is broken -
--and all the while the golf channel is providing analysis WITH THE GURU'S AT THE TABLE!!!!! what a time we live in.

you will understand why I said Michelle is surrounded by idiotic adults.
1/ "BJ says SHE is stubborn and wants to play the men"...You mean to tell me these adults didn't talk her into this?!?! BS!
2/He further says she plays the men's events because the LPGA only allows her 8 exemptions. OK, but the LET (European LPGA) and the Asian LPGA would love to have her play 8 exemptions on their tours too - tough competition is there too: MIyazato, Laura Davies, Iben Tinning, Virginie Lagoutte...these are top female players that know how to win on their tours. So Michelle can play 8 exemptions on each of 3 top women's tour - 24 tourneys! that sounds like a full schedule to me - with the REAL opportunity to get better against players who know how to win!
So really BJ should shut up and let the 16-yr old develop her own ideas and not burn her out by convincing her that playing the men is HER idea.
Michelle Wie is still very young in the sport. Within the next few years she will reach here prime, and if she believes that she needs added assistance to get there, then she should take initiative on her own to make that decision.
I doubt that Wie would ever truly accept a mentor. The way she hires and fires (Greg Johnston is a good example) is an indication of extreme arrogance and immaturity. She’s only a teenager but has been elevated to a higher status that unfortunately makes people forget (if only temporarily) that she is merely a child. Perhaps in 4 or 5 years she will be ready to shake off Dad and accept something/someone new. Until then I think we’ll be seeing a lot of reruns – Michelle trying to golf with men and striking out because has the wrong focus.
The Golf Nut: The Golf Nut
As Megan so wisely said earlier, mentors are different to going out and hiring a career counselor. A mentor chooses to take on the task because that's what they do. That's the type of person they are. Very occasionally someone will agree to be a mentor when asked, but normally they appear.
Michelle Wie is on a journey, just like the rest of us. She's going to meet people who want to help, people who don't have her best interests at heart, mentors, and challenges galore.
