Wie need adult supervision?

Michelle Wie said after her 81 today, and finishing dead last again:

"I definitely want to keep playing out here and competing with them. I'm really enjoying it. Obviously, everyone knows my ultimate goal is to play in the Masters. I like playing out here, making cuts -- start making cuts -- start getting Top 10s. I mean, who knows what's going to happen?"

Well, I doubt that she "really enjoyed" her finish this week very much. I didn't hear her say this quote, so the last part is confusing. I assume those are her future goals, but if it's something that she thinks could happen soon, it makes her sound crazy. She's been giving press conferences for years but something like this reminds me of how young she really is. I suppose she'll get old and cynical soon enough.

I'm guessing the one to stop this is not going to be her, nor her father, nor Leadbetter, but rather her sponsors. Nike specifically has had amazing track record (pardon the pun) at putting their marketing muscle behind winners; Tiger, Jordan, LeBron. She may be be fine with finishing last while waiting for her game to come around, but I don't suppose Nike will be so patient if she is making them look bad.

Additionally fans will tire of seeing her finish last and then the exemptions will dry up.

Hopefully none of this comes to pass, her situation is a fascinating one (as evidenced by all the golfblog posts about her) and hopefully that can be rolled into something positive and successful.

I hate to say this: Wie is not good. I mean, each and everyone one of us reading this post knows at least 10 people who can shoot those scores.

That's fine if capitalism allows a sideshow to generate enough revenue to turn a golf tournament into a beauty pageant, but does anyone really expect her to "win," "make cuts," or "compete?"

Oh yeah: and I want to play in the Masters too.

I assure you I am not a hit and run type of person, I love the sport of golf and I enjoy reading about the subject of golf. I also enjoy reviewing golf products and spreading the word about the ones I truly believe in. Some suggest that I am “Pimping” my tape; aggressive Marketing yes, Pimping no. Allow me to put my money where my mouth is.
I will give you a free roll of StukOnTapes Gorilla golf grip tape. That’s right I will give it to you free. You be the judge. Go to http://stukontapes.theblogaddict.com it’s just that simple.

By the way... Can we open this up to a discussion of why she attracts attention and gets sponsors' invites anyway? Is it the quality of her play? (No.) Is she outrageously attractice? (Subjective, but there are certainly more beautiful players out there, as many fan pages will tell you.) Is it her age? (Possibly, though she looks 35 and not 15...)

I'm not trying to hate on Michelle Wie, but I need a realy fundamental understanding of her appeal? I'm getting a very good sense that she will go the way of Hypercolor T-Shirts and "The Bachelorette." Zero substance tends to do that...

Ya know you really brought up an interesting question; What is her appeal?

I believe their attachment is emotional and not intelectual which would indicate that her combindation of age, tall slender body, and loads of potential has developed some type of fantasy "spell" if you will.

That's the reason she's cashing in now. The Wie camp know it may not last until she's an adult. Gobbs of potential turns into lackluster performances, and her youthfull looks turns into something entirely different.....

Thanks for that comment. I totally agree.

I'm sitting here watching the Auburn game with my pal, and he brings up a good point. Michelle Wie is best compared to the conspiciously creepy (and porky) girl on those new Hummer-magician commercials: a miserable disappointment in the face of such great expectations.

You know, my best guess at her popularity is this: the porn industry in America easily generates more sales each year than all of Hollywood.

I wish her all the best, but more than anything I wish she would go back to 2nd period Algebra and let the hardworking journeymen pros out there get some credit for dedication and good play. They deserve better.

Oh, c'mon. Y'all are letting your hate get away from you. It's true that Michelle has accomplished very little against the men this year. But on the LPGA she's played consistently and contended frequently. She hasn't won this season, but neither has Creamer, Pressel or Gulbis. Part of her appeal is in seeing if she can continue to improve. She improved a lot over her performance last year, and I hope she continues to do so and get that first win.

Two last place finishes, that's improvement.

Good point. And I can't say this enough: I don't hate her. In fact, I don't care enough about her to like or dislike her. I do think you bring up a good point though...

But she is being treated PHENOMINALLY well for someone who hasn't done ANYTHING to earn it.

But who hears me on the Hummer commercial thing, eh!?

Your right! What is her appeal.
Seems like the media is trying to make a female 'Tiger Woods'.
She has not displayed one ounce of superior talent that would be a ticket to the mens tour.
If she wants to play with the men, why not the Nationwide Tour.
She is fast becoming a novelty.
But her handlers need to bail her out on interviews.. Did anyone notice how many times she said ''you know'' in the post second round interview.
She had to say it close to 50 times.
She is starting to sound like a Valley Girl. ''Like You know'

Wow. Amazing. Another reason to really not appreciate ALL she has to offer.

I will say, I feel like we're starting a movement here...

Thanks for making me feel empowered, everyone!

Any comments on the fact that if we really did have an all-gender tour, it would be all men? And I'm not trying to be inflammatory here; in fact, quite the opposite: I am an absolute supporter of equal rights for men and women. I just think forcing this issue is a bit silly...

The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses competitive athletics be divided among competitors of the same Tanner stage (i.e. how far along each kid is in puberty). Maybe we should do that? Is that what everyone wants to be "fair?"

Wow, it's good to see her trying. I wish her all the luck in the world.

I doubt Annika Sorenstam would have fared much better than Wie at the 84 Lumber. You guys need to seriously lower your expectations.

At 8:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

PLEASE.....Don't even put her in the catagory as Annika. Wie is good played and Annika is a GREAT player. SO, don't say that Annika would have faired the say as her at least Annika has enough smarts to promote her own Tour. Maybe Michelle and her backers should take some lessons from the REAL PROS....

Isn't it time she actually has to earn a place in a tournament? It would be nice if the tournament organizers would quit making a mockery out of their events with the gratuitous free passes she continues to accept. She can't compete at any course with over an inch of rough and can't make an important putt on any tour.(she will probably be a very fine female player if her daddy doesn't totally destroy her)

1. Ditto to every post I ever wrote about Wie here or on my blogs. That quote of hers on your front page story is extremely sad to me. She needs a reality check before it is too late.

2. Please ban the walking, talking hunk of spam, Tape Guy.

3. Some people think because the public is talking about something, that it is a credible topic and real event. Do you know who believes 100% in fabricated perceptions like that? Public relations people. Wie is their latest schtick. The tragedy is that she believes it is all true, that she can really do it, that all she needs to do is improve ... and why should anyone tell her differently when everyone is profiting and people are talking? It feels like an episode of "Candid Camera" because it is so set-up, ridiculous, and extremely embarrassing.

Wie is young, naive, and, as most kids, thinks she can do anything if she only *tries.* Well, she can't lift a Ford over her head and she'll never win on PGA Tour. Just facts. Realities. If her goal is to make a cut, she will do that. If her goal is to make the top 10 in the Masters, I think we need a fairy Godmother to quick come in and reverse the evil spell which has fogged Michelle's mind.

PS: Ban the spammer. Doesn't he know he's hurting his product with his sleazy tactics and intrusive posts? (And don't go saying the same about me ;)

Not sure how much better Annika may have done but I am reasonably sure Annika would not have finished any worse than DFL.

The difference is Annika would not have played the 84 Lumber event because she is there to compete and that course is not a good fit for a female player, any female player.

The 84 Lumber and the European event were amazingly poor choices for Michelle Wie from a competative point of view but then that has never seemed to be her focus anyway.

I've just recently started getting into golf. It's great to hear such passionate dialogue. My question is actually to supplement the question of Wie's appeal. Is it more interesting to watch a great player micromanage their game over the course of their career? Or is it more interesting to watch the progression from promising 15-year-old to mature and potentially great adult pro?
I'd be inclined to say that the former would be more interesting to the seasoned veteran who could appreciate the nuances of game evolution which are harder to spot for us beginners.
Maybe her presense is meant to attract the viewership of less experienced golfers who can appreciate and even identify with Wie for her potential and imperfections?
