Tiger Woods blows final round lead to lose to Harrington in playoff
Is the apocalypse upon us? Did Tiger Woods just blow a final round lead? Bidding to become a threepeat champion of the Dunlop Phoenix Open in Japan, Tiger Woods looked to be in control of the tournament. But Tiger uncharacteristically messed up. With a 2-stroke lead on the 16th, Tiger missed a three-footer while Paddy Harrington rolled in a birdie. Two shot swing; all tied.
On the second hole of the playoff, Paddy drove in the rough and then went for broke splitting his ball through a "Y" shaped tree. With shades of Phil Mickelson's shot at the U.S. Open overhanging, Paddy made his miraculous shot. His next shot was within two feet for a tap in birdie. Tiger uncharacteristically missed a twelve footer for birdie to lose the tourney. (More from TGC)

Obviously it had to happen at some time. He's only human...I think.
Harringtons shot was gutsy and it paid off. Probably unnerved Tiger
a bit. After missing the short putt
I am sure Tiger wasn't feeling too confident about the 12 footer.
I found a new site with lots of lessons:

Can you imagine if one day he blows a major? Actually, I think so far in his career, he is alone with Nicklaus. From what I've read of golf history so far, at least Hogan, Palmer and Snead are famous for choking in some very big spots. Bobby Jones blew a few at the beginning of his career also. Not sure about Hagen, Nelson and Watson, though.
I'm a big Watson fan and remember that he was known as a choker for awhile before he became adept at staring down Nicklaus and winning majors. Whether Tiger will ever "choke" in a major is debatable, but I'd imagine that the day will come when some young stud outplays him on the last day as has happened to all the greats.
Ok, Tiger missing a four foot put on 16 didn't help but I'd give some credit to Harrington who shot four under on the back nine rather than saying Tiger blew it or choked. I tend to think of Jean Van de Velde or Phil's recent U.S. open for blown leads. Especially since those were majors.
As for Nicklaus, and his record setting finishes at 2nd in majors (which will never be broken), you could say he was a choker in majors (despite his record wins and number of 2nd place finishes where he came from behind. Although many of those finishes were the result of his partner doing something miraculous (Watson at Pebble), so perhaps he was not a choker, but just the result of miraculous shots like Harrington pulled off.
Then again, look at Tiger at last year's Dunlop, and he pulled off a miracle, making a par in the playoff when it never should have happened.

Don't know if you could call it a choke, but it was close, at the 2005 US Open. Failed to get up-and-down on 16, and 3 putt 17. Didn't Campbell win by one?
What's the deal with Harrington with grass all around 3/4 of the ball and backing-it-up 10 ft?
Check the article from Golf Digest. Square groves don't make much difference from the fairway, but substantial from the rough. They gotta go, Harrington doesn't hit a shot in the fairway all the way down the hole and makes birdie backing the ball up 10 ft?
Tiger didn't play well, and maybe even deserved to lose with the loose iron shots he hit on the entire back nine. But Harrington wins because of the grooves in his clubs? Not sure I get it. It wasn't just the playoff hole either, it was like 4 or 5 times he hit shots out of the rough that just flat stopped. And we wonder why players don't care about hitting in the fairway anymore?
