Michell Wie shoots 78 at Sony Open -- currently second to last place

Michelle Wie may be playing with a wrist injury, but the repeated near-last-place performance against the men cannot be good for anyone's psyche. Shooting 8-over (43-35) and placing near the bottom of the field so far is beginning to wear thin. Michelle's a great talent, but it takes more than talent to perform well. It takes a smart game plan, and recognizing one's shortcomings.

I just watched some highlights of Michelle's first round. First of all, it looks like Michelle is still growing -- she definitely looks bigger. Second, Michelle has a new putter and actually putted much better than before. This is a very positive sign. Unfortunately, her driver was pretty balky, and she hit the water and OB a couple times. Hopefully, she can put together a decent round tomorrow.

She has a lot to learn....with time and determination perhaps she can compete against all competitors.
Let's see how she handles failure. At such a young age this experience may result in a super competitor who can win against anyone.
Life's failures handled properly are springboards to greater successes....
AT least she's up for the challenge.

she has a lot to learn for sure. i listened closely to faldo's comments about her body posture while walking the first round v. other men's events. he feels she is moving in the wrong direction, very cautious and tentative, his concern is that this is hurting her psyche, her mojo man - without mojo she runs the risk of free falling into oblivion.

i think faldo is correct when he says she needs to go out and win on the lpga where she has shown signs of great promise - she needs to win man, she will not be a superstar for very long if she does not start winning.

I am simply stunned by how soon she has tried to crack the men's game. It's a huge tactical error by her management. MW has (had ..?) the opportunity to do for the women's game what Tiger did for the men's, in the modern era, and I believe she simply needed to play her way into the women's tour over a couple of seasons, and let her natural talent take her to the top. Along the way, she's have earnt her spurs and learnt how to cope better with pressure.

By hammering straight on to the men's game, she's become nothing more than a freak show in a short skirt for men to leer at / make jokes about.

Great shame, I hope she recovers from it. She should cancel all other men's tour appearances now, and concentrate on the LPGS Tour until she has a genuine chance of avoiding being a laughing stock.

Yeah, I'm tired of bashing Kelly over at TGC. I think I'll take a break and tee off on Wie for a bit.

Guys .. let's face it - the only thing Wie has and is proving is the fact that she can't play anywhere near the level of the men's pro game. This whole business of her 'trying to make the cut' is now officially a joke. Michele -- we say "give it up girl!"
PS: can anyone imagine Michele playing in the Masters on a Hootie excemption?

Hello?... Guys?... Michelle is fine!

Walt seems to "get it" but others, like Faldo, who are suggesting she's being damaged, and now has a severely bruised psyche...Well, nothing in her demeanor indicates that. Did you see her post round interviews?

I've said it a few times on these boards in regards to Michelle, as well as on my own blog: Women just don't have as much to prove as Men. Women can come in second, or third, or dead last... repeatedly...and still have their egos intact. And that's what the Michelle Wie story is all about.

Does she have a lot to learn? Of course she does, she's 17. And she realizes she's got a lot to learn. And right now, while she has the opportunity, she's enjoying learning while playing with the men. Even if she's always near last place. Can you guys imagine that? I didn't think so. but I can.

If Michelle continues to play the way she's been playing, the sponsers will lose interest and she'll have to focus exclusively on women's events for a while. I think she'll be fine with that if and when it happens, but for nows she's taking advantage of a unique opportunity afforded to her because of a killer combination of extreme youth, major talent and (like it or not) her telegenic good looks. Yes, in golf, like in life, it really pays to be a good looking woman.

Anyway, I know not everyone sees it that way but I do think it's interesting to look at a female perspective on this.

Maybe nothing in her demeanor indicates that but clearly her scores do and last I checked, scores are all that matter when they are handing out the trophy.

First off, it should be noted that she still hasn't hit the magic age where the LPGA makes her a full member. She hasn't fought for it either. Thus, she is young, keeping sponsors happy by staying in the news (going to college, men's events, strong finishes in LPGA majors) until she meets the age requirement to be a full member on the LPGA. Who can blame her for keeping the sponsors happy, and getting the chance to play in men's events, where she is invited, that few women in history have experienced.
Regarding Faldo, an addendum to his statement is that he made those comments with the assumption that Wie's "goal" is to make cuts in men's events. While Wie may state to the press that this ia a goal, it may not be her personal goal for attending the events. It could be getting the advise from PGA pros she plays with, it could be furthering the opportunities for wamen in the future to be able to play in men's events, or it could be shallower, and could be just taking the opportunity to play alongside golf pros that she idolizes, despite how it may hurt the viuew of women golfers and their skill vs. men.

These are all thoughtful comments. PowerFade raises a good point, about the benefit of Michelle Wie receiving advice from the PGA players.

In fact, Michelle did receive some advice during the practice round from David Toms, who told her that he thought she was trying to swing too hard on her driver (which sometimes produced the hook). When he saw her hit the power fade slider, he told her that's her shot! Michelle agreed. Unfortunately, it was hard for Michelle to implement the change in the 1st day.

All of this BEGS THE QUESTION: why isn't Michelle Wie receiving this kind of advice from David Leadbetter?? This just underscores how it looks like the Michelle Wie camp is operating without a game plan.

mulligan, you say the Wie camp is operating without a game plan and I say they are indeed operating to a plan and that plan is called the "Money Plan".

"mulligan, you say the Wie camp is operating without a game plan and I say they are indeed operating to a plan and that plan is called the "Money Plan"."

Exactly! It's the only reason. She has so many detractors right now, and none of them are being criticized like they were a few years ago because it's become so obvious.

If she really believed the tripe that she spewed with Rich Lerner about being so confident then she'd play for LPGA events. She 17, there's no way the LPGA would turn her down for early entrance. In fact, the LPGA is likely sending her more letters then she gets from credit card offers. If she's so confident why didn't she every play in the US Amateur? Women's that is? Cause everyone knows that her weakness is her heart and her competitive spirit and drive to win, so they avoid putting her in those situations as much as possible.

She would be stupid to not play Sony, it is one of her sponsors, its in Hawaii, etc. Not sure why she goes through the travel hassle and headache of playing JDC and the Euro event when she is almost assured of playing just 2 rounds. If her goal was winning, which I do not believe it is, instead of playing JDC, she would play womans events in Asia or lesser men's events where she should make the cut.

That being said, realize that she made over 20 million last year, more than any other active golfer except Tiger, Phil and Vijay.... without winning a tournament... for the last 3 and a half years... her most significant victory, and her last victory was the 2003 woman's pub links. Can anyone name anything else she has won? I am not being sarcastic when I say you have to give credit to her team, getting that kind of payment from those kinds of results, masterful. Unfortunately for me, I am more interested in watching the best players play their best and not as interested in watching someones bank account.

too young! too young! too young! If her managers would slide her over to the LPGA she could take a few years to grow into a monster competitor.

At 5:01 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, it's hard for me to understand why she/her team keeps on insisting she tries on the men's tour. I mean, so one of these days she makes the cut... so what? She still hasn't won a thing. She's come close to a few womens majors... I think it would definitely put her up there if she was able to win one of those... history's not going to praise her making a cut on the men's tour. Someone else will do it again in the future... but if she won a major at her young age? yeah, i think that one will be in the books for sure.

Great point. The Babe made the cut in one try.

Exactly! So if you can't make the cut, what's her next goal? Not to be dead last? Give it up and have a goal to WIN on the LPGA.
She is playing primetime tonight on TGC. If they follow her more then the low scorers, I'm watching a movie instead. I'm also thinking of boycotting any further coverage this year of "Watch and see if Wie can be dead last"

Guys, likely Phil Knight is sitting there right now saying to himself "you can't pick 'em all." Looks like we have a flash in the pan, a lot of marketing hype and no substance. Bascially a failure to launch.

On another point -- what do you guys think about the Golf Channels coverage package so far? I'm giving it a 4 out of 10.

the only thing that separates Ty Tryon and Michelle Wie now is that Wie has the LPGA to fall back on. that's it. don't believe the hype.

I'm not a big supporter of Michelle Wie, and her complete lack of a winning resume, but these comments are really over-the-top. Michelle's got skills to play in the LPGA, but she needs to work on her passion to win, so she can compete with the Anika's of the world. Right now she's a side show.

calygolfing, that's my point. wie has the lpga to fall back on. she might do well there -- that's what I meant.

but her potential playing with the men is about as good as Ty Tryon.

Guys, the Ty Tryon comments are right on the money. BTW - wasn't Ty a Leadbetter project too? Can anyone tell me if Leadbetter helps anyone get better?

Ty Tryon Update:

November 19, 2006

------------------------------------
STAGE 2 OF Q-SCHOOL SURE ended ugly for Ty this year. He finishes the week with rounds of 77-74-76-78 for a +17 total. He needed -10 to advance to the next round.

This poor finish means that Ty will likely continue to play in obscurity overseas, or perhaps he'll take a crack at the Canadian Tour.

Yes, I agree. I was kind of responding in general to the overly negative responses to Wie , and incorrectly quoted yours.

Does anyone happen to know how Wie's money is being managed? Do her parents look after all her earnings?

Guys, just watching the Golf Channel's coverage of the Sony and believe it or not they've jettisioned Wie and have now adopted Tadd Fujikama!!!

In response to Patricia:

I'm sorry but if that is your view on womens sports, why call it a sport? Sports are competitive, that is the foundation on which they are build.
By the way this is PROFESSIONAL golf.

That is by far the weakest argument i have ever heard anyone say.
Why walk rounds of golf? To chitchat with fellow golfers, acting like billboards for huge corporate sponsors?

The whole thing with Michelle Wie is reverse logic. In a normal world sponsors sign up big stars because they compete a lot and they do that very well, so they pop up on TV quite often. It promotes brand awareness.
In the case of Wie, sponsors urge her to sign up in competitions she can't handle. The result for the sposors is the same. The young lady and (once) very promising golf player, is gonna feel the backlash of this one day. (you refer to her post round interviews, ever heard of a facade?)
The biggest problem in her case is her age, and coping with those losses and how they are represented in the media. One day on a pedestal, the other day the center of critique etc.

Unless of course she does think in your manner and doesn't care about competing. But how on earth would she have gotten this far and went through all that trouble just to "enjoy" life on tour.

Any professional sportsperson who isn't driven by a winners mentality, won't make it. If you don't have that mindset it is indeed easy to wipe those losses away under the pretences of learning.

Tiger Woods only has one thing on his mind when he's playing, winning winning winning ... kick their asses!
THAT is how a professional sportsperson ought to think in order to be successfull, and that is why he is the number one in the world (sic.).
