Has Michelle Wie lost the "wow" factor?

When Michelle Wie was 13 years old, her talent and potential seemed unlimited, downright phenomenal (see here). Well, today, Michelle's 17 1/2 years old and coming into the age when results matter more than raw potential. Even if she wins now, it won't generate the "wow" factor as it would have two years ago. Now, it's expected, and people will only start wondering why she hasn't won yet (nevermind almost getting banned from the LPGA last week).

Paula Creamer won her first LPGA tourney at 18 years 9 months and 17 days, having just finished senior year in high school. Michelle Wie is graduating this year. Time to start producing results. Results matter.

Wow? What wow? Never had it. Never will. But she is smiling on her way to the bank though.

Hype only lasts so long, and even though she's only 17, I can't believe hers has lasted this long. She better start winning if she doesn't want to be golf's Ryan Leaf. At some point you have to stop saying "she's talented" if she can't win or even make the cut.

She is still an amazing player. Her wrist injury didn't help but once she is back to full strength I am sure she will be a dominant player.

It's interesting in the GD article she states, "Athletes should go to college before turning pro because they're not mature enough". She should have heeded her own advice but couldn't resist the money Nike and Sony threw at her and lost her childhood in the process.

Unlike Michelle Wie who graduated on time, Paula Creamer seems to have graduated a year late. I suspect she was only a credit or two short, and that she finished all her work long before her graduation ceremony. In other words, she finished her senior year 12 months earlier, and then picked up a couple of credits as a part time fifth year student. I am guessing, but it seems like a reasonable guess.

If Michelle Wie lost her childhood, it was gone before she turned pro. After Michelle Wie's fourth round 82 was the biggest story in the 2005 Open, much bigger than Anniks's flop, SI published complaints by Morgan Pressel that not enough attention was paid to the final round 82 by a 15 year old amateur--and that was just a small part of the criticism that was directed at Michelle Wie that year while she was still an amateur. Michelle Wie does, however, seem to have plans to delay becoming a full time pro until after she has had some college.

Its really a sad story! She needs to play competitive golf on the LPGA before she even thinks about playing with the big boys. Who likes to see her put up a score in the 80's? Not me!

Her camp is full of idiots. She has become a joke, albeit a rich one... Now the "wow" is now directed toward how high her scores seem to be, and not how talented she once appeared.

Given the recent news it's all hype and that's what keeps going. People will get bored soon and looks like there is a new kid on the block now

> "Wow? What wow? Never had it. Never will." -- WOW. That's one mean-spirited comment. How quick many forget just how well she performed in past events, usually in top 5 finishes! Man, maybe that commenter just hates kids. That's right, she's a 17 year old KID, for cryin out loud, that has done very well up to now! Give her a break, she will dominate soon, as long as her stupid father stops doing the managing. lol

The only thing it appears that she'll dominate is the headlines for shooting +80 scores, missing cuts, insulting and offending her pro-am partners, making air headed proclamations during press conferences, taking improper drops and being disqualifies, blah, blah, blah...

Better a bad round than bad manners.
