Is Oakmont too difficult?

"I broke 100," said Tiger after his practice round at Oakmont, the site of this week's U.S. Open. Vijay Singh says the winner could be +10. (More)

The players definitely don't seem to be looking forward to the greens of Oakmont...The final winner could well be around Singh's estimation!

Golf Channel had a short piece on putting the greens at Oakmont with the local Pro. He was standing on a ridge with a down hill putt of about 10-15 feet. He nudged the first ball to get it rolling and it ended up 15 feet past the hole. Then he demonstrated how to putt the greens. He aimed away and uphill from the hole to give the ball more length to slow down at the hole.

We may see some crazy putts, both good and bad, this week.

Ernie Els has also given his feeling on his blog. I'm looking forward watching them hitting a 300 yards par 3. Ouch !

I don’t mind this kind of golf test every once in a while. I’d worry if every major or every tournament started doing this kind of thing to increase their stature or something, but for a US Open, I’m excited. I have those moments on the golf course where I feel like “what the doozy just happened?!?” on putts, so it’s nice to see pros having the same kind of experience. Yes, it’s a little bit sour grapey. So sue me.

"too difficult" implies they are playing against the course. They are not. The course can not win the US Open, there is no requirement that the winner be under par. One of the players will win regardless of if the final score is -20 or +10. Par is just a number. Call the 288 yard hole a par 3 or a par 4 or even a par 2 if you want. It does not matter since it is the same for everyone in the field.

My only concern is will good shot be rewarded or not? We have seen situations in the past where it is just not possible to put a ball close to a pin or a shot that misses being perfect by a foot ends up rolling off the green and into a water hazard. I hope that is not the case @ Oakmont this week.
