Steve Stricker strikes again

You've gotta love it when a grown man is reduced to crying on the 18th hole. Only this time it was out of joy, not heartache. Steve Stricker birdied 4 of the last 6 holes to win the first Fed Ex Cup tourney at Barclay's, with a very emotional victory.

Not too long ago Stricker lost his tour card and hit rock bottom with his golf swing. He hadn't won a stroke play PGA event in 11 years -- dating back to 1996. (He also won the Match Play Championship in 2001.) This year, Stricker had an exceptional 3rd round at the U.S. Open, only to fade on the last day with the jitters.

Today, though, Stricker was not to be denied. He's now No.1 in the FedEx Cup point standings. Way to go, Steve!

Hey,

Why was the U.S. Amateur under-covered in the media this year? I guess the toughest statistically (on # of holes played basis) individually played championship to win in the country is dead?

No direct headline on NBCSports.com? At least I knew who won the UFC fight last night (per NBCSports.com). 2.123 hours of final round match coverage on NBC? I guess people at NBC have conceded that the U.S. sport fan would rather watch millionaires duel it out in the FedEx or watch UFC 98, rather than for Golfing Glory. Flashes of your arguments of NCAA vs. Professional Sports come to mind.

It just doesn't have the panache that duels like Tom "Putting God" McKnight v Hank "Drive the 17th Green" Kuenhe had, or the 3 back to back come from behind wins from a Tiger over some great personalities, especially the 3rd one over Steve Scott.

Michael T and Colt's duel today had the lookings of a sweet finish when Mike stuffed the 16th green. I put down my study materials and was like....here we go.

Then a tough second long fairway shot into the 491 yard 17th proved to be fatal to Mikey T. The concession occured, and then 2 seconds later, an Sunday Night Football commercial appeared, and I was back to studying.

It was depressing that one part of my golfing BCS (which includes the Masters, US, the Players, and US Am) of the year has been repressed to 2.125 hours of coverage, and have to be next to a computer to get analysis that just is not worth my time off the couch.

Sorry for the rant, just disappointed. Sweet tournament. Under-covered. Golfing purists unite.

Tom McKnight, I'm with you, buddy. U.S. Amateur deserved way more coverage and attention than it got. Way more. It would be like if they didn't show the whole Rose Bowl in prime time.

Still stoked for Steve Stricker, though. Great to see someone persevere like that and get rewarded for it. Did you see fellow Wisconsan Jerry Kelly waiting for him on the 18th to give him props? Now I'm crying, man. Choi and Mahan seemed psyched for him too. The Barclays ended up great. Psyched for Beemer too. Glad he'll be around next week cuz he played great.

I'm very happy for Steve Stricker and I was pulling for him to win. I also long for the days when men didn't cry in public. Man law?
