How much credit does Butch Harmon deserve for Phil Mickelson's drubbing of Tiger Woods?

Back in June, Butch Harmon opened his big mouth and declared that his new pupil Phil Mickelson will overtake Tiger Woods. That was a month after Phil had won the TPC with a virtuoso performance.

For most of the summer, Phil has been a non-factor because of a wrist injury. But, yesterday, suddenly Phil made the entire year look entirely different, much in the same way his meltdown at Winged Foot did in 2005. Only this time, Phil's late season play has made 2007 look different for his heroics -- not stupidity -- yesterday in defeating the usually unstoppable Tiger Woods in a head-to-head pairing that for most of the round looked one-sided in Phil's favor. Seeing a playing partner of Tiger's beat Tiger on Sunday is very, very rare.

Earlier in the week, Phil said Butch Harmon told him a couple secrets about Tiger's game, so when they played together, Phil would chuckle to himself when he saw Tiger do them on the course. Who knows what Butch said, but it seemed to have worked. Phil played awesome on Sunday. Hiring Butch Harmon was probably the smartest move Phil has made this year. Butch has a big ego (so I hate to give him too much credit), but I think Butch's bravado and big mouth actually can make Mickelson a tougher competitor on the course -- even if he does have man-boobs, as several commenters have duly noted.

With Tigers riches why would he not pay Harmon a lot of money and then make him sign a confidentiality agreement to ensure that anything they discuss or any of tigers good or bad techniques remain confidential? That way Harmon would not give him tips on Tiger...also tiger might not go back to Harmon now in the future?

Good point about Harmon. I think he can help Phil with his attitude. But I think it is mostly about trying to get into Tiger's head. Tiger had a very uncomfortable public falling out with Butch after a more than ten year relationship. Is it going to work? I'm not convinced by anything I saw on Sunday. It's easier to get into Fort Knox than into Tiger's head. Phil played solid, but in Tiger I just saw a guy who hadn't touched a club in 3 weeks after a thoroughly draining major victory at Southern Hills. He's in pretty much cruising mode now until March, when he starts gearing up for the Masters. Nonetheless, if his distance control on his putts hadn't been shaky all 4 days due to his layoff, it would have been Tiger by 5.

Still, good for Phil. Maybe he can finally stop faking that wrist injury now.

Nonsense.

Why would the hunted make adjustments to what others are doing? He only works on improving his game and he is convinced that the work he has put with Hank is the right thing for his game long term. Last I checked, he is still the world no. 1 and the money leader. Phil has beaten him once, by 2 stinkin strokes, on a week his putting was not on.

Please gimme a break.

The top 10 players in the world are very close in talent with Tiger maybe having just a little bit more. Phil may be equal to Tiger when he is playing his very best, but that does not happen often. The difference between Tiger and the others is his mental toughness. He keeps his focus on what he is doing and do not worry about others. This works wonderfully when he is playing well and leading a tournament. However, when Tiger is not playing well and has to do catch up or he is playing with someone who is playing awesome then it's hard for Tiger to keep that mental focus. If you know you have always won against the other player then it's easier to grind. However, when the other player starts to win then mentally it's much tougher. What Butch is trying to do is establish a precedence for Phil so that he can fall back on when he is paired with Tiger. I don't think Butch could give any Tiger's secret to Phil to make him more relaxed. Phil was relaxed because he was playing well. If he was not playing well then relax or no relax he would have lost. There are too much credit going to Butch. His only credit is to teach Phil to hit the drive on the fairway. All other credits should go to Phil. Bottomline, golf is easier when you are playing well. Otherwise, it's just hard. For all his mental toughness Tiger still lost at the Masters and US open and I think not enough credit have gone Zach's or Angel's way. Tiger is consistently the best player. Phil is getting there. Tiger always say the more you put yourself up there the more likely you will win. Another way to look at it is the more times you put yourself up there the more potential you have of losing and news being written on how you have been knocked down or "drubbing" ... This may be a new territory for Phil because of the level of expectation now. Butch should work on this instead of keep putting Tiger into Phil's head!

Good comments overall, but I have something to add to the above thought. I think this idea that Tiger is not a good come from behind player is a bad rap. Tiger is just a very consistent golfer. What has he missed, 3 cuts in 10 years? It's just that he has not transcended every law of golf ie like everybody else he doesn't have his A game every time he tees it up. The difference between Tiger and the other top players is that when they are having an off week, they miss the cut or finish out of the top 20. Tiger never does that. Even when he is off his game, he is almost always within striking distance of the lead in the final round of every tournament he enters. I can't believe that people don't understand golf enough to realize what he is accompllishing with his consistent excellent play. What have Angel Cabrerra, Zach Johnson and Padraig Harrington accomplished since their major victories - nada, they've played like chumps. That's normal in golf. Yet, Tiger waltzes into the Deutsche Bank after not touching a club for 3 weeks after Southern Hills and proceeds to finish second. If he had been playing some golf, his distance control on his lag putting would have been sharper and he probably would have won by 5 strokes. Amazing. Still, everyone is sititng around making ridiculous statements like he got "drubbed" or that he doesn't play well from behind. I don't get it.

Phil showed the calm to get inside Tiger's head today. No exaggerated fist pumps by Tiger after he closed the stroke gap a bit. No Tiger's roar today, just a good round by the world's number one. Prediction: Tiger loses the Fedex Cup this year.

What continues to amaze me is how often I hear people say Butch Harmon is overrated, has a big ego, and loves the spotlight. Yet Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, Greg Norman, Adam Scott, Davis Love III, Fred Couples, just to name a few, all have sought out his advice. So are these player really that stupid and naive? These players make a living off playing the game of golf and have all sought out Butch's help. Maybe, just maybe he knows for more than people think. Could all of these players have been successful without Butch's help, probably. But the fact is they didn't do it without him. They all sought out Butch and have all enjoyed great success with his help.

Your last comment was impossible to (logically) dispute. Well said. You're right, the most overlooked fact about Tiger Woods is the near zero missed cuts. One missed cut in a major in...how long? And you're right about the fact that when he's off his game, he's in the top 20, mostly top 10, and the other guys miss the cut.

As far as Butch Harmon supposedly giving away secrets, I'm wondering what mannerisms or habits he's talking about. It's interesting that those details aren't out there for discussion, isn't it? I'm not sure what to make of all that, but Harmon definitely tightened Mickelson's swing, but Phil had to execute.

I'm still hoping Phil and the rest of the guys get close to his level so it isn't all Tiger all the time.

Golf is a lot like championship poker. You need to read your opponent as well as your course. Phil did a great job of reading Tiger. Whether that was Harmon's insight or Phil's doesn't matter - he just did a great job.

I don't recall anybody saying Butch Harmon is overrated. I think the problem people have with Butch is that he is annoying. He got himself fired by Tiger, because he wouldn't respect Tiger's privacy, took too much credit for Tiger's accomplishments and used Tiger's name excessively to sell books and such. I like the guy myself, just because he's a character. He was in his heyday after Tiger fired him and then went into a "slump" ie didn't when a major for a year and a half or so. He was a hot interview back then. "What's wrong with Tiger? Why did he change his swing?" Butch just loved answering those questions. He even got a job as a color commentator for Sky TV for awhile. Tiger shut him and eveybody else up with his play. Now he's hooking up with Mickelson to get some more attention.

phil was just being phil. the comment about butch giving him tips about tiger is pure gamesmanship. remember his "inferior equiptment" comment a few years ago - phil had a great laugh about that and the media and nike took the bait. tiger did not - his comment at the news conference was to just laugh and say that was "just phil being phil".

is it me or do his man-boobs look bigger lately?

If my guess at par over four rounds at this tournament is correct, Michelson struck the ball 272 times. Harmon didn't hit, putt, chip, or shank Mickelson's ball once during any of the rounds. Mickelson got into Woods's head on that last round and flustered him enough to lose the tournament. It's probably the pairing Woods hates the most. That was obvious at the handshake on 18 on Sunday.

When Tiger is just completely on fire, no one can beat him, however if he's playing well and Phil is playing well, I think Phil has a better chance of beating Tiger than anyone else on tour.

Phil wins. Phil beats Tiger. So, Phil has man-boobs.

tiger's handshake on 18 - yes, what a disgrace - compare it to nicklus shaking hands with watson or johnny miller or trevino - class all the way, a true champion thru and thru.

old school v. new school? i'll take old school.

What most seem to miss was the discussion of how Tiger's left knee looked like an old man's when he had surgery in the early 2000's.

Everything else being equal, Tiger knew he had to change his motion for longevity. His good buddy Mark O'Meara was a guy that peaked in his early 40's, exactly the swing model he was looking for. Take that model, plug in a whole lot more talent and you have a Tiger Woods that continues to win majors and will last a lot longer.

Butch's annoying habits probably didn't help, but I suspect it was hearing the same thing over and over in the effort to perfect a motion that was destroying his left leg that motivated Tiger to say good-bye to Butch.

I am a teacher myself (world class piano, not golf) and I can say from experience that it is not easy for close teachers and students to separate regardless of who is instigating the separation. So I would not think either was at fault for the separation; it was simply a very successful relationship that had run its course for very fundamental reasons.
