Fed Ex Cup finale turns into fiasco for Tim Finchem

Players will not be allowed to use any of the greens at East Lake in Atlanta, the site of the finale for the Fed Ex Cup, during the practice rounds before the tournament. The ban effectively means the players can't have any real practice rounds on the course. Even the pro-am has been canceled. The Golf Channel is reporting today that the greens are all burnt out from summer heat. PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem is feeling even more heat as the finale for the Fed Ex Cup is turning out to be a mini-fiasco.

If the conditions don't improve, the backup plan for Finchem may be to install temporary putt-putt greens short of each hole.

As a West Coast resident I have always thought it rather strange that the PGA Tour doesn't play out here in the Summer - California has some of the best weather in the nation during that time of year. In their wisdom, the PGA tour serves up pro golfers sweating through the South, East and Mid-West during July through September.

Then they play Pebble in...February. I hate to tell them, but that isn't exactly considered to be a choice month for Monterey golf by the locals out here. It may be the single worst month to play out there.

Now the tour will pay a big price: the Tour Championship will have horrible greens because lo-and-behold it was terribly hot and humid in Atlanta in August and into September. Who could know?

People still remeber that PGA that Elkington won where the greens were terrible so maybe any publicity is good publicity? We'll see next week.

Ahem, Tiger shooting a 63, tying the course record, smashing his old record for the tourney?

Is Tiger winning so blase that it deserves no comment? He loses to Phil and it is the biggest news of the year; he wins in *stunning* fashion and no one notices?

And where did Elkington win his PGA on those terrible greens? Surprise!...he won it at Riviera CC, which is located in...California! And, even more ironic, they played in California during the summer.

So does that hurt or help your theory about playing in California during the summer.

Not only do I live in California now but I grew up in Atlanta so, Young Tom Morris, I have first hand knowledge of both locales. Anonymous 7:37 is right. They should rotate the schedule four months to the left and get the late summer tournaments out of kiln conditions in the SE. Yes, the green conditions for the Elkington PGA were horrendous. They were also anomalous. Yes, every few years or so, L.A. will get hit with a record-breaking heat wave in the summer, like we just had. But they end, usually after five or so miserable days, and then it's back to somewhere in the 70s virtually every day. But any day in Atlanta between May and mid-October is a practically guaranteed diabolical scorcher in the 90s. Not only that, humidity in Atlanta is off the charts and traps the heat and turns the air into a semi-solid. At least in L.A., it's dry heat. And for the record, Riviera is on the west side of L.A., closer to the ocean, which benefits from lower temperatures and ocean breezes. And, this week anyway, L.A. would be i-fucking-deal for golf because the last few days have been record-breaking gorgeous and the forecast is for more of the same. Man, the top 30 are really going to pay the price for greatness this weekend at East Lake. And anon. 8:55, yeah, everyone noticed Tiger's 63, but this post is about another topic. Everything doesn't always have to be about Tiger Tiger Tiger.

finally a good discussion about a very timely topic - by people with local knowledge to share and this ass kissing tiger bitch has to start whinning because tiger is not the focus of this post - holy shit - man.

I live in Atlanta. We had a tough August that's all. 3 straight weeks of 100 degree highs. Almost unprecedented. Old timers around here say only once 20 years ago did something similar happen. Most of the courses around here are just fine anyway. The problem at East Lake is they installed bent grass greens. Big mistake. I don't see how that is FInchem's fault. East Lake is a great place for the Tour Championship and golf course conditions are normally just fine around here in September.

By the way, I lived in So. California for 10 years also. They definitely have better weather and it's a great place to live if you like living in a barren desert wasteland where only lizards can survive. Nice golf course, though. As long as the Colorado river keeps running it will be a great place to play golf. I don't know why the PGA doesn't swing back out there later in the year at times. Seems foolish to only play there in February.

Hey, Daryl. Where did you live in SoCal? The Mojave? Because I'm in L.A. and I'm looking out my window RIGHT NOW at cascading bougainvillea, palms, California oaks, eucalyptus, Chinese lanterns, licorice plant, birds of paradise, kangaroo paw, and night blooming jasmine up the wazoo, and I'm not even craning my neck. The word "barren" does not exactly spring to mind. Not a lizard in sight, my friend. Anyway, it's not a competition. Atlanta is the best and has fantastic golf courses. I grew up on one. It's a golf town. And East Lake is a knock-out. But Atlanta in September is still high summer. And I don't know who your old-timers are but whether it's literally 100 or not is moot as far as Atlanta is concerned. Cuz it always feels like it's in the 100s. Let's see how quickly the shirts of the lucky 30 become sweat soaked. Hey, you're there. Are you going to catch any of the tournament?

Hi Anon:

Lived in North San Diego County and then in Santa Barbara. Those aren't bad places, but once you're beyond the reach of a sprinkler system, it's all scrub brush and lizards. One thing I like about the East is things grow here - on their own, and we have some wildlife. Never a big LA fan. Outside of the golden triangle, there are only several square miles I consider habitable. Of course, all of those areas are insanely expensive. If you find the right spot, I won't argue - SoCal is a nice place to live - really overrated, that's all.

It's too hot in the summer in the South, but it's not that big a deal with central air. I love the year round golf after living in NY for many years. I've been down here 2 years now and love it. I going to the tournament either Thursday or Friday. East Lake has some great grandstands behind the warm up area. With only 30 guys there, it's great to get there early and watch everybody hit balls. I'm going to follow Tiger, I didn't bother to go last year because he wasn't there. 2 years ago I followed him around, but his game was a little off at the time. Bart Bryant tore the place apart - go figure. Will be a good opportunity to watch Tiger play at his hottest.

To Time Finchem’s credit, he came out with a list of problems that he sees with the FedEx cup. Therefore at this time I would not want to blame him for what is clearly Mother Nature’s fault. Scheduling, well maybe, but then if you want to find a fault with someone you pretty much manage that any which way. But quite clearly a lot is riding is on this one event and a brilliant finish is a must to give a much needed boost to the acceptance of the FedEx Cup by the players and the spectators alike.

No wonder then that the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America put their entire weight behind the course superintendent by issuing a statement of support. Quite obviously they have ensured that if anyone directs their wrath towards the course superintendent Ralph Kepple they would be right behind him. Tim Finchem must be secretly praying and hoping that the weather cools down big time. Isn’t there a famous saying that says “Bent grass and hot weather don’t go hand in hand”? Well, ok, that may not be a famous saying but it is a fact that some people would do well to register before they draw the schedule for next season.

I know the greens were exceptionally damp because of the crews trying to get them back into tournament shape, but I was surprised that they were as nice as they looked. The players didn't have much of a problem putting on them, and overall I thought the whole tournament was pretty darn good...
