Rory Sabbatini believes Tiger, Phil, and Ernie shouldn't be eligible to win FedEx Cup

"The way I see it, if you don't play all four events, you shouldn't be eligible," Sabbatini said. More.

Sabatini is a cry baby. This guy just does not know how to keep his mouth shut and back it up on the course. Saw him at the Deutsche Bank two weeks ago, does not even acknowledge the crowd or show any sign that he's having a good time. Also a pretty small guy as well.

Rory is right, they shouldn't be eligible

He is such a baby. He wants them out so he has a chance to win because he knows he isnt as good as them. He should go back to busing tables.

rory is a cry baby. his wife figured out that the only way he could win is if he wins at east lake (not going to happen) and tiger places 12th or lower (not going to happen) - so instead of accepting that he just idin't do it this year he starts cpmplaining to the nearest reporter - not exactly the voice of a champion.

amy if you are reading this post give hubby a swift kick in the ass and explainn to him that his comments are not sabatini-esque, but rather sabbatuna-esque

Rory says "If they played one event for the playoffs in the NBA or baseball or football, you play one [game] and if you decide, OK, I'm going to skip this week, that's a forfeit," he said. "That's the way I see it."

Rory obviously doesnt know what hes talking about (thank god he's not american). In football (I'm assuming American football since he referenced the NBA and baseball) you get a first round bye in the playoffs if you are one of the best teams in the conference. In baseball, the best record in each league is allowed to choose the first round format against the wildcard...its also what SEEDING is all about - the top ranked always should have the advantage going through the rounds - making it easier on them for busting their hump the entire season.

At 10:04 AM, Blogger MuellerArts said...

That's just being whiney... like when a schoolchild starts pouting because he can't win and starts looking for excuses.

The point that this is a playoff and there should be seeding is exactly right. Tie seeding from the regular season into the playoffs and give first round byes -- or really go out on a limb and make it work like a tournament.

If it hadn't been for certain players dropping out for a week, this mess of points wouldn't be so close (I'm speculating, but I'd take odds on it).

he should play lpga events

Every body knows about Rory’s controversial comments started months ago. He becomes sleepless because he has no shot on winning the 10M prize. He knows well he did not have the game to meet the challenge of this cup. The only way he could win is to tee off with his mouth.

if rory had game, he wouldn't be so lame. sounds like sour grapes to me.

At 7:39 PM, Blogger Patricia said...

With all due respect, Rory's just saying what lot's of others are thinking. Not that I agree, but I'm sure the second tier guys who slog away desperately, playing any tournament they can get into, are secretly saying, "right on Rory".

If Tiger can earn more points in three events than anyone else can in four, then to say that he shouldn't be the FedEx champion is insane. As far as I know, the FedEx cup is about determining who has played the best golf of the year, with a very strong emphasis on the last four weeks, the playoffs. This is Tiger unless Mickelson or Stricker wins 2/4 playoff tournaments.

At 6:34 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

...but I do not think Ernie had skipped any playoff event

At 7:42 AM, Blogger Chad said...

What a loser. He is such a midget this guy. I heard he has to have 2" taken off his shafts. I think true golf fans shouldn't even acknowledge his presence

At 11:49 AM, Blogger Patricia said...

FYI -

Ernie skipped Boston.

RS is 5'10", which is about average for an American Male. Perhaps he's shorter than the average PGA golfer, but that hardly qualifies him as a midget. Oh, and he's 10th in the world BTW. I don't know if that counts for anything in your book.

At 7:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

who gives a shit what the second tier players are saying. if rory wants to become the voice of the secon tier then he is crazier than anyone thinks.

it shouldn't matter how many events these guys play in, it is a points system and frankly i think they expected this and that is why it is a points system. whoever winds up with the most points wins - it is very simple - rory is a jackass, regardless of how much patricia defends him

Last I checked Rory S. was 10th in the World and 4th in the FedEx Cup. So he gets a "bye" when it comes to the relevance of his comments. And, like Patricia, I see his point. If the organizers of the FedEx Cup, aka the FedUp Cup, had wanted to institutionalize a first round bye in its charter, or whatever, they should have spelled it out in advance. But they didn't, okay, hence the "confusion" and controversy about whether or not it's cool for to bow out. Obviously, they'll have to tweak it all after this inaugural year, but then let it be like it is in football. You get a first round bye if you've earned it, but then you play the remaining events until you get eliminated or someone's a winner. What's happening here, which I find irritating, is that players are pissing off and skipping weeks when they feel like it. And in a sport where the rules are more byzantine and draconian than any other sport, it's weird to suddenly have this "if it feels good, do it" kind of attitude about the play-offs. Are they the play-offs or a Grateful Dead concert? As long as you have your hand stamped you can leave and then come back in the next day. Or two weeks later? They'll figure it out but, in the meantime, get off the tenth greatest player in the world's back. Dark Star!!!

Rory Sabbatini is a total moron, he says "the way i see it, you should have to play all four events to win the fed ex cup" , but hes arguing an already arbitrary definition of the playoffs, which he has no place to argue against. it was quite simple, based upon the points system that was set up at the beginning of the year, whoever gets the most points, wins.....simple as that....tiger woods and others observed the system, decided it was possible to win without playing all the events, and simply didnt.... if they win and sit out one tournament then it means they played better than rory sabbatini......rory sabbatini is a complete and utter dork and anyone who defends him is a total loser, JUST LOOK AT HIM for christ's sake, he thinks he looks good, he must spend an hour each morning putting on his fuckin hair gel and then making sure he has enough gum in his mouth so he can chew it obnoxiously the entire tournament, he chews it especially hard when a shot is in the air to add to the drama, and apparently he thinks hes tough as well, walking around with his fag tight shirts and trying to act tough, hes a fag, through and through, and is simply pissed that he is 10th in the world and not first....it's jealousy that causes someone to makes comments like these, you can guarantee that if rory was to win the cup by playing in three tournaments he would say "the way i see it, if you win the most points, you should win the fed ex cup" interesting that if things were the way rory "saw it" his chances would improve by a factor of 100X, especially considering that tiger currently holds a three stroke lead going into the weekend....but of course, rory believes tiger wont deserve to win because he only played in three out of four events...hes gay and doesnt know it, end of story, all should agree

At 10:37 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. I think there should be changes made next season so that anyone who does not play in all of the playoff events is not eligible. I know this may upset Tiger Woods fans, but I think it is the right thing to do since I have seen enough of him already.

Although im not a huge rory fan i have to agree with him. its clear with this tournament that the players who have played every week of the fedex cup are clearly worn down (see stricker). im not saying that im not a fan of the system i think it brings a new level of excitiment to golf at this time of year but i think that there is alot of room to improve on this system. perhaps bonus points to those who compete in all 4 events or something along those lines.

At 7:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i can't believe this discussion. it is a points system, the players are independent contractors, they can opt in or out - it is a strategy - it was interesting to see this strategy develop during the playoff - it is a strategy that is unique to golf and to this event - seeding and the ability to opt in or out based on the points you have earned and the talent you have demonstrated all season - it was unexpected but it added to the drama - by having top guys opt out of events it actually helped idiots like rory have a better chance of winning and placing higher -

why don't you folks get that? the opt out strategy is the best part of the playoff - not knowing who would do it until the last moment was exciting - think about it.....

At 8:41 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't go so far as say "exciting"; for me it was mostly confusing since it felt like the players were making up the rules as they went along. I don't even care about that but, you watch, next year the PGA will either make it a rule that you play every one or, if you've earned it, get a bye, or they'll officially give the players the option to play or not to play. Whatever. Rory Sabbatini scored his way into the #4 slot and not because every other top guy in the PGA opted out. You can think he's an idiot all you want but the fact is he played his way into the top five.

reread my comment. the opt outers made it easiier for rory to move to the top. opting out helped him, if one of those guys played and scored well (a strong likelyhood)- rory (and others) would not have moved up as far - he played well, no question about it, but the opt outs helped him - no question about it.

as far as your other comment about the tour legislating that players must play in all events - it will never happen - these guys won't agree to it - since they are independent they are in a better position to dictate to the tour than vice-a-versa.

my favorite part of the event was when big tim tried to get tiger to kiss the cup (the never kissed comment) and tiger didn't do it. a very strong example of who dictates to who in the relationship bet. players and the tour. i also thought it was very interesting that no executive from fed ex was visible at the awards crermony when big tim handed the trophy to tiger.

as far as opt outers not creating excitement consider this: it was a very big story each time it happened... it created much needed drama and press stories out the yin yang during the beginning of the football season - just what everyone hoped would happen - it will be a very big story next year - all the analysts will speculate for weeks prior to the event about opt out - the players will not do it until the last moment as part of their individual playoff strategies- the press will ask who has the balls to do it because on paper it appears to put the opt outer at a disadvantage - how does that not create excitement my friend?

7:13: I guess we'll have to wait until next year to see but I think you're probably onto something. But anyway, why don't you think any FedEx execs were visible? In order to deflect criticism of the corporate crass factor of the thing? Personally, I always think winners look ridiculous puckering up for the obligatory trophy kiss and I did notice that Tiger didn't "take the hint" from Finchem and kiss it right there for the photo-op. One other thought. Obviously Mickelson didn't play well in Atlanta but you could make the case that if he'd gone to Chicago and played in the flow of his DeutscheBank winning game, he would at least have earned more FedEx points and headed to East Lake with his A game. That would have given us a more exciting conclusion, for sure -- if Mickelson had been more in contention, point-wise and game-wise. Do you think he regrets blowing Chicago/BMW off?

you are right about phil. if he had played he may have come in #2 rather than 3 - but that is the part that i like best about the event - did his strategy work for him? did he make the right call? it adds drama and promotes discussion after the tournament - it makes this event unique - without the opt out element in this event it is a much blander playoff - opt out worked for tiger, didn't work for phil, did it work for ernie ?- who knows but it is a good discussion.

as far as fed ex not having a presence at the awards ceremony - i hear your point about marketing crassness, but i don't know - the main sponsor is always in the awards ceremony - it is interesting, my own conclusion is that fed ex is not happy, i've learned over the years to not listen to spin, but watch closely - they were not in the ceremony and that tells us that something is off.

It did confuse me at first when I found out that players could skip playoff events, and I see where Rory has a point- it doesn't seem fair at first glance...however, he comes across as really whiny and unprofessional with some of his comments. True, the FedEx Cup rules could probably use a little tweaking, but that's the way they are this year, just play and stop complaining. I think Rory would be taken a lot more seriously if he hadn't already shown all of us that he talks (and sometimes acts) before he thinks. His history with his words has really caused this to be a bigger deal than it would be otherwise...just MHO :)

At 3:23 PM, Anonymous Balcombie said...

I agree with the thread that says the players who have amassed enough points during the season to skip an event should be able to if they like. Basically, it is a chess move that they may employ if they like. If a player feels tired and thinks the rest is a benefit then let him lay off. It worked for Tiger, and did not for either Phil or Ernie. While we're at it, Steve Striker could have laid off as well provided he felt gunning for 4th or 5th in the D\Fed Ex Cup was right for him. What people like Sabbatini don't seem to realize (assuming he is not just being disengenuous to catch a headline) is that it is all about risk/reward and there is risk in laying off a tournament and not getting the points.

That said, I'm not sure a tournament sponsor is happy about this, however there is no tournament in the entire schedule that can count on every player participating. So the notion that the FedEx Cup should have 100% participation when even the British Open cannot hope for the same strikes me as wishful thinking.

I don't think Sabbatini is being the ogre others claim. He probably figures that the whole point of the thing was to get everyone eligible to play but that is probably a pipe dream. No Tiger, no one cares. And Tim and company know that all Tiger really cares about is majors, and perhaps breaking Sam Snead's total victories record now that it is a realistic possibility.
