Tiger, Mickelson, and Vijay hack way through 1st round of Deutsche Bank
It was a really ugly front nine for the dream team pairing of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Vijay Singh. While others were well under par, the marquee threesome shot 36 (Phil), 37 (Tiger), and 40 (Vijay). Vijay four-putted the first hole for double bogey. He shanked some shots on the back, apparently after completely losing his swing. Phil was the only one playing well -- until the 9th hole when Phil tried a miraculous shot through trees and the rough (reminiscent of Winged Foot), only to clip a tree and end up with triple bogey (erasing an earlier eagle). Tiger even lost his cool after consistently errant drives and slammed his club into the tee marker and then ground.
Lefty finished -1, Tiger +1, and Vijay +3. Not what the tournament sponsors dreamt up!

Call me what I am,, a cynic, but this made-for-TV "dream grouping" was made two years to late. And, of course, the Tour marketing machine hyped it for money, ratings, anything but good golf. Predictably, it flopped. They should have learned something from the failed Woods/Mickelson pairing at the Ryder Cup.
I never thought I'd ever see the word "shank" used in the same sentence with Vijay Singh's name. During the end of the round I heard someone saying that he's trying to make a change to prevent the club from being laid off. Manipulating the club will do it.
It's to bad the "dream grouping" went out so early on Saturday. It was the perfect opportunity to show this hand picked group on a Saturday afternoon.
All the hype for this group and it wasn't even shown on the weekend. All we got was "you should have seen this highlights". They should have went out early Friday and late Saturday...who made that decision?
As we've all seen, Tiger will find a way to bounce back. I'm hoping Phil does too, but if you had to put money on it, Tiger's still the smart bet. He'll get back in the chase.

Kerry said "They should have went out early Friday and late Saturday...who made that decision?". I don't know if hindsight played into this person's observation but it was a great one none the less. I have to think that the three players making up the dream grouping are not enthusiastic about their part in this tournament hyping a publicity stunt. Woods and Mickelson don't like each other and Vijay is less that stellar lately. It's going to take playing a round together to tolerate one another for the purpose of hype. Fire everybody who came up with this debacale.
"Tiger even lost his cool after consistently errant drives and slammed his club into the tee marker and then ground."
If it was Woody Austin, or anybody else, for that matter, you would have called them a "loose cannon".
Ditto.
