Why can PGA players still use metal spikes?

Phil Mickelson usually uses metal spikes. Vijay Singh has blasted Lefty for leaving tracks and scuff marks on the greens. Well, this past President's Cup, Phil used soft spikes but he wanted to use metal spikes to needle -- no pun intended -- good ol' Vijay. (More)

I had no idea metal spikes were still made or allowed. Do you think the PGA players should be allowed to use equipment that other golfers can't?

A few years ago, I heard that Tiger used metal spikes as well. The explanation is usually that the pros (at least some of them) great greater torque with their swings and need a more solid base. I think the pros are also better at repairing the damage these spikes cause before leaving the green. As to them using metal, I don't have a big problem. What I think needs to be changed is the rule that prohibits repairing spike damage caused by someone else before putting.

I think it is OK for the tour players to use new or prototype equipment that just hasn't been released to the public yet but I think they should have to wear soft spikes if that is the normal course rule. There should not be exceptions made just because these guys get paid to play.

I agree with both arh8ie and bradly...with suggestions: isn't it sad that pro's are better at repairing damage? That isn't a skill set that takes a career to master. Maybe while waiting for the starter to call your name, you could be getting a quick lesson on the practice green? Courses need more staff active in teaching newbies, not just focusing on those paying for lessons. I think it's okay for tour players to use new or prototype equipment, too...in practice rounds. Once the tournament starts, a different standard has to apply to keep the playing field level.

Well said. How about replacing divots, not littering and raking traps? The whole etiquette thing seems to have been lost.

In my opinion, metal spikes don't offer any better traction than the soft spike shoes we all wear now. I wore the old metal spikes since I learned how to play golf, and there seems to be way more gripping surface area on the new tech soft spikes. The pro's who still wear metal spikes are just trying to be different for the sake of being different, or they're just old school and refuse to change.

There are a few LPGA players who still use steel pikes. Sophie Gustufson wears soft spikes, but during the British Ladies Open she changed to steel pikes at St. Andrews because of the dry conditions.

Does anyone know of any scientific studies regarding steel vs. soft spikes? You'd think with all the technology in the game now, you know, MOI, titanium, three-piece balls, etc., SOMEBODY has to have done some testing of this. Links?

My personal guess is that steel is marginally better, a small, small percentage of the time. Also, that steel spike marks affect the game marginally, a small, small percentage of the time.

I don't see the big deal as long as there is no damage to the greens, which it looks like might be happening. Vijays statement about Phil is a good example.

I wear soft spikes - but sometimes hear that they are worse from the greens than metal ones, which can apparently give the green a constant and very unintrusive aeration by those who wear them and can walk properly. I have also heard that they clog up less, which means that if there is a diseased green, there is less chance of that diseased soil or grass infecting other greens, having been stuck into the soft spikes which have many bits for grass to get clogged up in.

Not being a pro, I don't notice a significant difference between metal and soft, and I do think that I prefer the feel of soft if the surface is not hard and dry.

What I miss is the nostalgic sound of metal spikes on pavement...

I think the main issue is with the golf course owner or greeenskeeper. If the cost of repair the turf is less than the publicity of having a pro play at your course, metal spikes will be acceptalbe to them.

But I'm no Tiger and I use soft golf spikes. I have been buying from www.textbookgolf.com for some months now and they are great!

I prefer to wear non-metal spikes because I like the cushy feel. In terms of grip, I find the soft golf spikes sufficient for my swing.
