The Golf Blog says: Now that it’s looking more and more unlikely that Tiger Woods will catch Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors, it’s worth reopening the discussion whether Tiger may still go down in history as the best golfer ever.
The answer is no. If Tiger doesn’t beat or match 18 majors, he cannot be considered the best golfer ever to play the game. Sorry, there’s just no discussion. In 2009, Tiger himself admitted as much when he was asked who he thought was the best ever. Woods replied: “Jack. He’s got 18. I’m at 14.” He probably didn’t think that 5 years later, he’d still be stuck on 14.
As The Ohio State University Golf Courses famously declares, “Jack Nicklaus, the Greatest Golfer Ever to Play the Game.”
