Predictions for 2005

Thursday begins the 2005 PGA Tour Season and I am personally very excited to watch the Mercedes Championships in prime time. (Hopefully, it will be better than the Orange Bowl).

I think this year Ernie Els will be making his statement on the PGA Tour this year. I expect him to win 2 majors this year. (Masters and US Open)

I believe Tiger will continue to be in his "so-called" slump and will not break through until after the US Open. But, once he breaks the slump, I expect him to win 3 or 4 times.

Phil will slowly fade away as he decides that he wants to be more of a family man than a golfer. I can see him becoming the next Freddy Couples, the king of the "extra season" events.

The US will get spanked in the President's Cup

Vijay will win 3 events and no majors.

Ian Poulter will wear Pink Pants again at the Masters and Union Jack Pants at the British Open

Sergio will continue his slide and become an unknown like his old girlfriend Martina Hingis.

The long shots of 2005:
Monty wins a PGA tournament
Justin Rose wins the Open Championship
Jack makes the cut at the Open Championship
The USGA and R&A make a ruling that limits the distance that pros are able to drive the ball.

The tap ins of 2005:
Titleist will still be the Number 1 Ball in Golf and on Tour
Callaway will continue to make metal woods which aren't worth the metal they are comprised of
The Europeans will continue to push the fashion of golf
Augusta National still won't have a woman member
The Golf Blog will still continue to bring you a different perspective on many issues golf.

Hope 2005 brings you many fairways, birdies, and fun!!

Today is the last day anyone has to sign up for the fantasy league we've put together. I encourage you (the authors here) and anyone else to sign up. Should be a hoot!

Oh, and "The USGA and R&A make a ruling that limits the distance that pros are able to drive the ball."?

Uhhhh, no.

Nice comment on the limiting of distance prediction, Erik. You beat me to the punch. Maybe they could just put a field goal net out at 300 yards.
Regarding Ian...there is no way he would wear the Union Jacks again. That Thursday had the phone lines lit up, and to wear them again would only sour the moment. Perhaps he will wear his favorite soccer teams colors?
I have to agree that Phil and Vijay will become yesterday's news.
Jack makes the cut at the Open? I assume when you say "The Open", you mean the British. Are you sure he is playing? Hope his caddy has no problem carrying the bag as well as Jack's artificial hip after it flies out into the 4th fairway.
I have to disagree about Sergio...I think he is about to come alive and finally beome that competition to Woods the press predicted. And Tiger will no longer be a pushover...winning two stroke play events in this off-season against a tough field. Mark me down for my prediction he wins the Mercedes (I know, I know...consider me jumping on the Tiger bandwagon of old, but I think he has come back to form).
If Curtis can win "the Open," is Rose a long-shot?
Happy New Years everybody...and if you don't live in California or Florida (Winter Rules...what are Winter rules?), hope your courses become playable soon.

Jason, your predictions for 05 stank.... but no worries. Hind sight is always 20/20 and I admit that this letter may have a bit of that involved.
Els making his statement to the PGA Tour in 05 was borderline obvious. He is a good player a won't drop like a fly. if you count out guys like that, they WILL prove you wrong time after time.
Tiger and his slump continuing... it was obvious that he was going to make it back once the beauty of his new wife wore off and he finally left the bedroom to hit the range. He is Tiger and only showed you glimps of his potential in the previous 8 years. He has been dominating since he was 6 years old and what he has done so far is not a fluke, but pure talent. He won't fade away until injury happens, he turns 70 or they ban blacks from golf again. One has a better shot than the other two and I am talking about injury. Hopefully Rori Sabbatini doesn't pull a Tanya Harding after this weekend!
Phil fading away? No way. that major made him even hungrier than he was before. It gave him an idea of what the big boys deal with and he is playing like he wants his next. I say he gets a half dozen majors in the next 6 years.
Vijay and winning only 3 events with no majors....you are dead on so far....as of half way through the season.=) Still a lot of golf to play and he is still glowing!

Sergio sliding into the unknown? See the highlights of the Booz Allen and stats of 05 so far.

Moving on to the long shots and tap in's of 05. The tap in's were far too bias. Sure Titleist will have the number one ball in golf. If Vegas had odds on that, they would be broke.
But Callaway making woods that aren't worth the metal from which they are made? You are crazy. They are right there with the top names and will continue to be. If you are a taylor fan, thats cool. They make good sticks, but that comment is completely absurd and you should take a mulligan on that. Annika, Phil, Charles Howell 3rd, see the Callaway site for more info. Re-think a few things for 06 and give us a new perspective like your site claims to give. Not a rookie's view!!!
