the state of golf
The USAToday has some excellent articles about golf today:
1. Preview of the year of transition (before playoff system)
2. Interview with PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem (who apparently is an optimist)
3. Articles on Tiger here and here
4. and Johnny Miller's predictions on Tiger

On a related note, GolfWorld (12/23/05) had their yearly rankings of players going into 2006. A few surprises:
Furyk at 3rd, Vijay at 4th. Perhaps youth before beauty?
Newbie Ryan Moore at 16th. Writers are expecting a lo of this kid.
Love at 17th despite 9 top 10s in 2005. Seems that the writers are making the case that once you hit 40, your game dissolves (anyone heard of Vijay?)
Howell at 20th despite no wins in the last three years.
Weir at 24th solely because of length. Health problems last year hurt him, but I bet he is the comeback player of 2006.
Rose at 30th. Hard to argue with who they put at 30th, but despite European Tour wins, he just doesn't seem to have the temperment to become a top player on the PGA Tour.
Clarke isn't even in the top 20, while Els sits at #7 after kneee surgery. Just doesn't seem right.
