Golf for Women
Ron Sirak has, as usual, an excellent article analyzing the status of the LPGA here. The article is accompanied by what may the dorkiest photo ever taken in golf, see here.
"Michelle Wie creates more buzz than anyone in golf right now, Tiger included. People are paying attention to the LPGA in a way not seen since Nancy Lopez had her spectacular rookie year in 1978, when she won nine times, five of them in a row."

I just wish that Michelle Wie would actually do something on the LPGA tour to garner all the attention...she has not done anything in my opinion that is worthy of all the press that she gets...does she have potential yes, but so do alot of the other young guns on the LPGA tour....the press should spend more time talking about Paula Creamer...by the time it is all said and done, she is the one that is going to take the attention away from Anika...Paula Creamer is the real deal....right now Michelle Wie seems to be more hype than anything...
Spinman, have you ever looked at Wie's record on the LPGA? Since 2005 she has played in 9 events out of which she finished in the top 3 over half of the time (5 times). All that while only playing part time. She hasn't won, but she has accomplihed a lot.
if you have not checked the photo, you got to, it is hilarious. agreed...dorkiest foto ever.
respect,
osUltimate
Anonymous I never doubted that Michelle Wie didn't have any ability, but she seems to be in the news an awful lot for someone who is only playing part time, and has not won a tourney...that is my "beef", that all the attention is not deserved...Tiger gets a ton of attention but he is out there more than "part time" and he is winning tourneys....Finishing in the Top 3 that is great, I am not taking anything away from that...but does she need to be in on every interview, do we need to know what subjects she is studying in school, where she is shopping, who she met in Hollywood...again the last time I checked this was the LPGA Tour, and that means GOLF....this is not hollywood that is all I am saying...dim the spotlight a bit until she starts to play regularly, compete regularly, and win....
As for the dorkiest golf picture, check out this photo of Thomas Levet.

Anonymous was correct to point out that even though she has not yet won, MW has a remarkable record in the few LPGA tournaments she has played in as a part-time teenager.
The reason that she's 'in the news an awful lot' is that she's an interesting story and is a marketing dream. Her length with the driver doesn't hurt either. Morgan Pressel has gotten her share of hype too, as has Paula Creamer. There is nothing new in that.
Pro golf is a commercialized sport where all money flows from corporate product marketing. MW is a beneficiary of that system. Pro golf is not a spiritual quest and concepts of fairness or equality mean nothing in the way that the money or media attention flow. To look at it any other way is the logical equivalent of lamenting that in high school, some kids are more 'popular' than others and isn't that terribly unfair?
By the way, it is the LPGA itself that promotes Wie in the way that irks the spinman. They can't wait for MW to be out there full time. Many are betting thath that MW will do for the LPGA tour what TW did for the men's tour: significant growth in attention and purses. All LPGA players will benefit from this.
Thanks for the support, Grandpa....er, I mean, spinman. It's really frustrating that Michelle gets all the attention and she didn't even have to go to Q school! In fact, I'd say that because she lives in Hawaii and looks Korean, I'm more of a real American than her! Geez, can't these people see real talent when it's staring them in the face?
