Tiger Woods wins CA Championship, but not without stress at finish

Tiger Woods won again today, but things got very interesting down the stretch. Tiger had a 3-stroke lead going into the 17th hole and the tourney seemed all but over, but Brett Wetterich stuffed his tee shot for a makeable birdie of 8 feet. Unfortunately, Brett, visibly nervous, missed the putt.

But on 18, Brett striped a 316 yard drive down the center of the tight 18th fairway, which is lined with water on the left. Tiger "layed up" with a 2-iron off the tee and "layed up" again with an iron. Brett then stuffed his iron to about 8 feet again. Tiger then hit his pitch deep on the green, almost to the exact place where Mark Calcavecchia had putted his ball off the green into the water for a triple bogey. Tiger, however, judged the 52-foot putt perfectly, leaving a 1-foot tap in. Meanwhile, Brett hit a nervous putt that stopped a half an inch short of the hole. Game over.

It is interesting, to see Tiger play not to lose, rather than to win by 12. You get the feeling that if he got to 18 needing par to win and bogey for playoff, he would play such to take double out of the picture.

I really saw a look of disgust on Tiger's face when Wetterich didn't sink the putt on 17 for birdie. I think Tiger thought, "If I were him I would have drained that and kicked my own ass!"

I think he would have loved to have been threatened so that he wouldn't have had the option to lay-up. I think he's really aching for a real challenger to test him.
