Michelle Wie shoots 79, dead last -- did she deserve exemption over Natalie Gulbis or Annika?
Ron Sirak blasts Samsung's decision to give Michelle Wie an exemption in the 20-player tournament over Natalie Gulbis, who has won this year.
"The spot that would have gone to Sorenstam then went to the player next in line on the LPGA money list, which happened to be Sarah Lee. Now, the person who really gets burned by the Wie exemption is Natalie Gulbis who, if Wie were not in the field, would have gotten the spot as next on the money list behind Lee. So a player who won this year and is one of the best box office draws on tour gets knocked out of the tournament by a player who has not finished better than T-69. Anyone want to explain that to me?"

Absolutely, a total joke. Wie should not be in the field! Wake up Wie camp, you started this train wreck and now your 18 year old daughter will either get it together or keep the downward spiral going. Let her grow as an individual & mature. Right now golf is not where it is at for her. The publicity & pressure to perform has been to much and the decisions you made in schedules and in her life have short sided her mental developement into young adult hood. The only thing that has been great is the money you have made at the expense of her growth as a person. I hope you are happy with all the wealth. Has it bought the happiness and peace you so desired for Michelle and yourselves?
it may seem crazy, but she is playing on a sponsors exemption which samsung gave her. why they did it in march is the real question - what were they thinking - they could have waited until 1 month before the tourney and anyone would have accepted - a chance to play in such an elite field - that is the real issue here - what was samsung thinking back in march - the wie issues were already out - why did they give her the exemption without waiting to she how she held up this year?
as for the wie camp - what do you expect - they have proved time after time that they are not capable of making good decisions as far as michelle is concerned - she is the poster child for exploitation by her father

Totally agree with anonymous first comment. I was completely irrate when I found out she was in the tournament. What a sham. It is definitely not fair to Gulbis, Annika, and all the other alternates. If I were the pros on the alternate list, I would have taken the issue to the commissioner.
I am, as well as my golfing buddies, sick and tired of Michelle Wie. A spoiled, and family abused pro wana be. True part of the blame stays with Samsungs decision, but why hasn't the LPGA commissioner stood up for the other hard working, day in and day out pros. Something needs to be done in the off season to make sure this doesn't happen again.
We in America have been taught to work hard and you reap the benefits of hard work. That certainly doesn't apply here. Michelle Wei is a sham and defines the word greed.
From what I have read, Michelle works very hard at her game and practices a lot. She can't be faulted for Samsung's desire to sign up a phenom for their tournament. However, she should be mature enough now to decline the invitation when it was obvious that her play was not up to par with those in the top 20 in the world. Just one more bad decision by the Wie camp. She's lost confidence, but she is still young and hopefully will learn a lot from this year. She will be back.
What happened to Wie...a year or so ago she was putting up some semi-respectable scores, but now she seems to finish dead last in every event she enters. Was it the wrist thing? or is she just so psyched out and unable to handle the pressure that she can't put up a decent score anymore? How can Nike justify keeping her on the payroll? I guess any publicity, negative or otherwise is still good for a company like Nike.

Samsung made a mistake. And Wie made a mistake by not declining the invite. I agree with the previous post. It is pressure. Wie played some very good, if not great golf, as a young teenager because there was no pressure on her to succeed. However, as soon as she was #2 in the world rankings, the expectation was for her to win on both the women's and men's tours. And that pressure was too much for her. As many before have said, she needed to learn how to win, and play under pressure. By avoiding junior tournaments, she never developed that ability. The good news for her is that expectations will be low next year.
The real question is whether she will ever be in contention again. I think its entirely possible that her career is over.
Wie should of did the right thing and not excepted the spot like Annika did. Gulbis was more deserving sure Lori Kane was more deserving(I had to throw that in I'm Canadian)
Looking at it now, you have to wonder what Samsung was thinking, but they offered the exemption in March knowing that M.W. could only accept a certain number of exemptions and they, along with all of the other tournies, wanted her... back in March.
I have a hard time blaming Samsung, they made a decision based on the info they had at the time. Sure it seems odd to give an exemption to an elite field ecent such as this to someone who had yet to win a tourney, but clearly back in March, even the biggest Wie doubters would not have predicted the disaster her 2007 year would be.
The correct thing would have been for her to back out a long time ago. In keeping with tradition, the Wie camp once again does not do the correct thing and once again we get to listen to how she just hit a couple of bad shots on her way to 79 and is now a mere 31 shots off the lead and 16 shots back of 3rd from last.
I'm still waiting to see Michelle in a swim suit calander. . .
