He is the smallest player at the Sony Open, at 5 foot 1 inch. He is also the youngest, at 18 years old. He is the only high school player in the field. And he had to qualify by playing the Monday qualifier. Yet Tadd Fujikawa shot the low round of Saturday, 8-under 62, and now is only 2 shots behind leader Zach Johnson.
OK. Tadd, who is from Hawaii, is basically playing his home course at Waialae Country Club. But still. C’mon. An 18 year old high school senior shooting a 62 at a PGA event? Let’s get real. This is so incredible! I remember I was playing high school matches in high school. The thought of someone from high school playing on the PGA tour and winning is almost unimaginable today. If Tadd can pull off a miracle today, he would be the youngest ever to win a PGA event. Other than Tiger Woods winning the Grand Slam this year and tying Jack’s record, I’m not sure you can find a bigger story in golf for 2009 if Tadd wins. Wow. Go Tadd!!!!
(Too bad the NFL playoffs and Inauguration concert will be going on as well. Another reason to start the PGA season later in February or March.)
